Why do you need to master the data center structure diagram?

The computer room of a data center often encounters this kind of situation: when the server has a blue screen or crashes, because the server usually does not have a restart button, the manufacturer's personnel are often unable to restart the server directly. At this time, the structural diagram of the computer room of the data center is particularly important.

Drawing the structure diagram of the data center room is usually a thankless task. In daily life, administrators rarely look at the structure diagram, so the result is that the structure diagram is redrawn when needed, which leads to low efficiency and missing information in the structure diagram.

The structural diagram of the data center room combines wiring and racks and various hardware. Some structural diagrams even include cooling equipment, air inlets and outlets, etc. Learning how to create structural diagrams correctly is time-consuming, but it is a valuable skill.

To make a computer room structure diagram, you must first understand the infrastructure of the computer room you are involved in, the number, distribution location, etc. The following briefly talks about the things you need to pay attention to when making a structure diagram.

What does the data center structure diagram include?

The most basic structure diagram is based on the data center rack and internal equipment diagram. This includes physical servers, all communication equipment such as switches and routers, UPS power supply units, backup equipment (tape drives) and any other data center hardware equipment. (As shown below)

Further structure diagrams have more details, which further demonstrate the value of structure diagrams. They include communication lines, device connections to each network segment, and multi-path redundancy and different levels of switch connection lines. If you need to re-plan the server path, such a detailed structure diagram will help you plan it conveniently. Without a clear structure diagram, you may accidentally configure multiple network interfaces on the same switch group when upgrading the network port, which will result in network storms and network loops.
