China Telecom develops 5G slicing technology to help the industry's digital transformation

China Telecom has been making every effort to popularize 5G. Recently, China Telecom's 5G slicing has made a huge breakthrough. According to C114 Communications Network, China Telecom recently joined hands with Huawei to jointly release the research results of the "5G Terminal Application Slicing Acceleration Project". This project is a strategic cooperation project between China Telecom and Huawei. Relying on China Telecom's self-developed slicing acceleration platform, terminal self-developed SDK, and Tianyi No. 1 2021, terminal application slicing acceleration is jointly achieved, providing "one-click acceleration" experience verification for Tianyi Cloud Phone and Tianyi Cloud Computer. This is the first time in the industry that terminal application-level slicing has been implemented in the 2C market and completed end-to-end verification of the existing network.

In fact, in recent years, the three major operators have been working hard on 5G network slicing. The commercial use of 5G SA makes the application of network slicing technology possible. The 5G network slicing solution will also unleash the potential of 5G in multiple scenarios and bring personalized and customized network services.

1. China Telecom continues to develop 5G network slicing applications

China Telecom's 5G slicing has obvious advantages. According to Wang Qingyang, director of the Mobile Communications Research Institute of China Telecom Research Institute, China Telecom has independently developed a universal capability for 5G slicing orchestration, which can realize network slicing lifecycle management, sub-slicing management and 5GC network configuration services. At present, Shenzhen's first police slicing private network based on end-to-end 5G SA network has been opened, and the 5G SA slicing service of Chongqing Smart Expo has been opened, and 5G directional traffic services are supported. He also said that China Telecom has implemented 5G dedicated line service pilots in Guangdong, Beijing, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Hubei, and signed contracts with Beijing (National Museum, Army, Beijing TV Station, Tsinghua University, Xidan Complex, etc.), Guangzhou (Shenzhen Public Security, Tianhe Bus, etc.), Jiangsu (Jiangyin Port, Zhenjiang Port, etc.), Zhejiang (Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, Hangzhou Boiler Group, etc.), etc.

The 5G slicing acceleration platform and Tianyi No. 1 2021 terminal have been fully verified in Beijing and Guangdong, laying a solid foundation for operators to provide higher-quality 5G 2B 2C slicing acceleration services. This will give rise to more abundant 5G 2B 2C application scenarios and business models, and promote the development of the industry ecosystem.

2.5G slicing accelerates the implementation of 5G vertical industry applications

Network slicing has received increasing attention as a key technology in 5G systems, and the three major operators have been exploring the application of 5G network slicing.

China Telecom has already implemented many industry applications of 5G network slicing. For example, recently, China Telecom and Dongfeng Lantu Automobile jointly built a 5G Internet of Vehicles project, which provided car owners with safe isolation and privacy protection of human and vehicle data through 5G network slicing technology; China Telecom, together with Sichuan Yongxiang Photovoltaic Technology Co., Ltd., built an exclusive 5G network for the factory through the sinking and slicing technology of UPF and MEC, achieving high-density and massive connections while meeting the factory's confidentiality requirements; China Telecom deeply integrated network slicing with public security applications to achieve hard isolation between police services and public services, ensuring that the delay of police services is stable within 20 milliseconds, and creating a new benchmark for Shenzhen's 5G smart policing.

China Mobile and China Unicom are also working on 5G network slicing applications. China Mobile has launched the country's first 5G SA commercial slicing in the medical industry. Relying on 5G, edge computing, network slicing, etc., it has provided intelligent empowerment for scenes such as the Internet Service Experience Center of Shunde Hospital Affiliated to Jinan University, the ambulance emergency center, the AR smart surgical platform, and the telemedicine center; China Unicom has provided Gree with an end-to-end 5G SA slicing private network, and the latency from 5G terminals in the Gree park to the enterprise intranet has been reduced from the original 20ms to 9ms.

3. Operators leverage 5G slicing to diversify

Industry experts pointed out that network slicing technology is universal and can be applied to all walks of life, and can help the 5G business model transform towards diversification.

To promote diversified transformation, the three major operators have launched customized slicing services for private networks. China Mobile customizes three types of networking modes for customers on demand: premium, exclusive, and premium. China Telecom has three service modes: "Zhiyuan, Bilin, and Ruyi" based on typical application scenarios. China Unicom's 5G private network is divided into three deployment modes: virtual private network, hybrid private network, and independent private network.

There is no doubt that network slicing is a key technology for operators to provide industry-differentiated services. It is beneficial to the industry's digital transformation and is also a new outlet for the future development of the entire information and communication industry.
