According to Yonhap News Agency, last Friday, the Ministry of Science and ICT (MOIST) of South Korea released the results of the investigation into the Korea Telecom (KT) network paralysis incident. The results showed that KT missed a command word during the equipment replacement process, coupled with the lack of internal safety devices, which led to a large-scale network paralysis across the country.
Starting at 11:00 am on October 25, a large area of South Korea experienced Internet outages. Preliminary investigations revealed that it was caused by a server failure of Korea Telecom (click to view news). KT initially announced that the company's servers had been attacked maliciously, but later corrected that the accident was caused by an error in the network path settings. The latest investigation results show that the staff omitted the "exit" command during the replacement of the enterprise router, which led to the first setting error in Busan, and then the network failure spread to Seoul and other parts of the country within 30 seconds. The main cause of the accident was that KT did not set up a safety device for data transmission errors. In addition, the management of equipment replacement was not in place. KT has already formally apologized for the large-scale network outage and said it will formulate a compensation plan as soon as possible. The Ministry of Science and Technology of South Korea plans to inspect the network management systems of major telecom operators and further strengthen network security. |
