According to foreign media reports, South Korea's Ministry of Information and Communications Technology recently stated that it has approved telecom operator LG U+'s plan to gradually stop 2G services by the end of June, marking the complete end of South Korea's 2G communication network.
According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea's largest mobile communications operator SK Telecom terminated its 2G service in July last year, while its rival KT Corp closed its 2G business as early as 2012. The shutdown of LG Uplus' 2G network will mark the end of South Korea's 2G service, which began in 1997. LG Uplus said it will help existing 2G users, who had 140,000 2G subscribers as of May, switch to LTE or 5G services by providing subsidies for mobile devices and their subscription plans. The company's termination of 2G services comes as local telecom companies attempt to expand their 5G networks. According to South Korea's Ministry of Commerce, as of the end of March, 5G users reached 14.48 million, accounting for 20% of the country's 71.1 million mobile users. |
