German media: Shenzhen has more 5G base stations than the whole of Europe

The article "Why Shenzhen has more 5G base stations than the whole of Europe" published by Handelsblatt recently pointed out that Shenzhen, China's 5G network already has 46,000 base stations. In Germany, there are only 850 mature 5G base stations. In other words, the number of 5G base stations in Shenzhen is 50 times that of Germany. At present, in terms of 5G deployment, China is not only ahead of Germany, but also ahead of the whole of Europe.

The article states that German network operators Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Telefónica also claim to have 5G networks that serve millions of Germans. The problem is that they do not rely on mature 5G mobile communications. Instead, they use software upgrades to make existing 4G networks suitable for 5G.

That means they're not using true 5G standalone networks. Eventually, consumers will see 5G logos on their smartphones, but there will be little difference in actual speeds.

In the field of 5G, Shenzhen is in a leading position in China and even in the world. As of the end of December 2020, Shenzhen has built 46,500 5G base stations.

Currently, Shenzhen has the highest 5G base station density in the country. It is also the first city in the country to achieve full coverage of 5G independent networks. In addition, Shenzhen is the "best city for 5G independent networks". Not only that, Shenzhen has the largest number of 5G standard essential patents in the world.

Data shows that by the end of 2020, China had 718,000 5G base stations, accounting for 70% of the world's total base stations. In 2021, China will have more than 1 million 5G base stations.
