FCC authorizes first batch of 6GHz WiFi devices

The FCC has reportedly authorized the first batch of Wi-Fi devices in the 6GHz band. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said in a statement that the new frequency band, the role of Wi-Fi during the epidemic, and the emergence of Wi-Fi 6 all indicate a good future for Wi-Fi.

“We’ve seen the power of Wi-Fi during this crisis, helping us with everything from remote work to telehealth to streaming and gaming,” he said. “Wi-Fi 6 will power these tasks and more, and will complement commercial 5G networks. In a nutshell, the wireless experience for American consumers is going to get better.”

Ajit Pai said Wi-Fi 6 could be more than two and a half times faster than previous standards. The FCC move increases the available spectrum for Wi-Fi by five times.
