With the advent of the 5G era

A series of new issues sparked heated public debate

Recently, three experts, Liu Bing, senior engineer of the Telecommunication Planning and Design Institute, Ding Dawei, professor of the Department of Communication Engineering, School of Electronic Information Engineering, Anhui University, and Wang Lusheng, researcher of the Department of Communication Engineering, Hefei University of Technology, were interviewed by reporters to unveil the mystery of 5G.

Download a high-definition movie in just a few seconds

Compared with 4G, 5G has significantly improved in transmission rate, latency and connection density. "The transmission rate of 5G has increased by dozens of times." Wang Lusheng gave an example, saying that a high-definition movie of several GB would take several minutes to download using a 4G network, and minutes using a 100M broadband, but it would only take a few seconds to download using a 5G network.

At the same time, the end-to-end latency of 5G networks is increased 10 times compared to 4G, and the minimum wireless access latency can be reduced to less than 1 millisecond.

What is 1 millisecond?

Take driving a car as an example. When a driver finds danger ahead, the reaction time for emergency braking is generally one or two hundred milliseconds. The millisecond latency of 5G is much smaller than this value. Wang Lusheng said frankly that this improvement determines that the transmission of communication links is no longer a bottleneck in the field of Internet of Vehicles and autonomous driving. In addition, the connection density that 5G networks can carry has increased by 10 to 100 times compared to 4G, which also provides sufficient transmission pipeline support for various vertical industry applications such as the Internet of Things and Internet of Vehicles.

There will be four operators to choose from in the 5G era

On June 6 last year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology officially issued 5G commercial licenses to China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Broadcasting Corporation; on December 24, the 192 number segment was released to China Broadcasting Corporation.

On January 3 this year, China Radio and Television Corporation (CNTC) was announced to license the 4.9GHz frequency band and agreed to deploy 5G networks in 16 cities. On March 19, CNTC's 700MHz frequency band (2 x 30/40MHz) technical proposal was adopted and included in the 5G international standard, becoming the world's first 5G low-frequency band (Sub-1GHz) large-bandwidth 5G international standard. At this point, CNTC can already use the existing 700MHz frequency band and the newly approved 4.9G frequency band to build a 5G network.

On May 20, China Mobile announced that it had signed a 5G co-construction and sharing cooperation framework agreement with China Radio and Television Network Co., Ltd. The two parties have determined a plan to jointly build a 5G network, jointly invest in the construction of a 700MHz 5G wireless network in a 1:1 ratio, and jointly own and have the right to use the 700MHz 5G wireless network assets. "I believe that in the near future, the public will be able to use the 5G network of China Radio and Television," said Liu Bing.

How big is the 5G base station signal radiation ?

Disputes over base station signal radiation have occurred from time to time in various places, and related news is also common. So, how big is the base station signal radiation? Will it have an impact on the human body? In this regard, Ding Dawei said that the impact of 5G base station signal radiation on the human body is minimal and can be almost ignored.

He explained that tests show that the power density of a 5G base station with a transmission power of 200W is 15.9μW/cm² in front of the antenna 10 meters away, which is far lower than the national standard of 48μW/cm². The base station is usually hung at a height of 30 meters or more, and the radiation generated decreases with the increase of distance. In comparison, the power of a hair dryer is generally above 1000 watts, and due to the close distance to the human body when in use, the actual radiation can reach 100μW/cm²; the power of an induction cooker is often above 2kW, and the radiation generated to a person within 0.5 meters during use can reach 580μW/cm².

In addition, due to the design of the mobile phone itself, when the base station coverage signal is weak, in order to ensure normal communication, the mobile phone will increase the power of its own antenna, and the radiation will also increase. Compared with 4G base stations, the density of 5G base stations is higher, the signal around the crowd is better, the radiation generated by the mobile phone will also be smaller, and the impact on the human body will also be smaller.
