Three major operators rush to climb Mount Everest to support 5G

Good news comes from Mount Everest one after another! Recently, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom have successively announced the launch of 5G network services on Mount Everest, which is a significant milestone in the history of world mobile communications and also reflects that China has taken a solid step on the road of global 5G development. In addition, China Mobile and China Telecom have also launched "5G slow live broadcast" on Mount Everest, presenting a 360-degree panoramic view of Mount Everest for 24 hours.

Three major operators’ 5G “rushes” to climb Mount Everest

Mount Everest is the main peak of the Himalayas and the highest mountain in the world. Many climbing enthusiasts are eager to stand on Mount Everest, and operators also have a desire to conquer Mount Everest.

So far, China Mobile has completed the opening of three 5G base stations at the Everest Base Camp at 5,300 meters and the transition camp at 5,800 meters. It is expected that before April 25, China Mobile will complete the construction and opening of two 5G base stations and all points at the 6,500-meter forward camp. China Telecom has built a 5G base station and opened a 5G network at Camp 1 of the Everest Base Camp on Mount Everest (5,145.3 meters above sea level). China Unicom uses microwave and solar power supply to achieve full 5G coverage of Camp 1 of the Everest Base Camp at an altitude of more than 5,000 meters.

The construction of communication base stations on Mount Everest by the three major operators was even more difficult. To ensure the success of this operation, China Mobile dispatched more than 150 employees to be responsible for construction and maintenance. They carried 8 tons of network construction equipment and living supplies on their shoulders and oxen, and 12 network maintenance and optimization personnel stayed on duty 24 hours a day in areas above 5,300 meters above sea level. China Telecom Tibet Company invested 42 people, and all materials were carried on their shoulders and carried to the construction site of the base camp at 5,300 meters. China Unicom arranged construction personnel to carry optical cables, antennas, auxiliary materials and other construction materials to the Mount Everest Observation Deck at an altitude of 5,000 meters and Camp No. 1 at an altitude of 5,200 meters by carrying on their shoulders and hands.

5G signal reaching Mount Everest may accelerate 5G construction

As we all know, the climate of Mount Everest is unpredictable, and it is covered by clouds and fog all year round, and ice and snow are rampant. Since Mount Everest is so high and the climate is so harsh, why do the three major operators invest so much manpower, material and financial resources to build 5G base stations on Mount Everest? As some netizens said: "My home is not covered by 5G yet, why are they installing it on Mount Everest?"

In this regard, Xiang Ligang, a communications industry expert, said that, first of all, Mount Everest is the focus of the world's attention, and the tens of thousands of passengers have a huge demand for communication networks; secondly, the successful coverage of 5G signals on Mount Everest also demonstrates the technical strength of Chinese operators. In addition, the 5G network on Mount Everest can provide better network services for Mount Everest sightseeing, mountaineering and scientific research personnel, and provide scientific information support for the development of Mount Everest tourism.

This time, the operator launched the "5G slow live broadcast" to let more foreigners know that Mount Everest not only has advertising benefits, but also promotes economic benefits. The "5G slow live broadcast" launched by China Mobile and China Telecom presents a 360-degree panoramic view of Mount Everest for 24 hours. You can enjoy the sunrise and sunset, the evening starry sky, and the changes of the four seasons at Mount Everest without leaving your home. It is understood that this is the highest altitude "slow live broadcast" in China, and it is also the first time that the 24-hour real-time landscape changes of Mount Everest are presented to the audience. In this regard, Ma Jihua, a senior telecommunications analyst, said that the 2020 Winter Olympics is imminent. If the creativity of climbing the peak of the Summer Olympics is continued, the Olympic flame may climb Mount Everest again. Therefore, the guarantee of 5G live broadcast is very important.

Staff from China Mobile Tibet Branch, who participated in the construction of the base station, also said that building a base station on Mount Everest provides good communication signals for nearby villagers, monks, mountaineers, scientific expeditions, etc. In addition, the annual mountaineering season is the main channel for tens of thousands of climbers to communicate with the outside world and even survive. The smooth network can better implement rescue. China Unicom also pointed out that the 5G network can more smoothly present Tibet's unique cultural landscape to the world, and it fully demonstrates the smart future of China's 5G industry applications.

Riding on the momentum of "new infrastructure", China's 5G is accelerating

The 5G networks of China's three major operators have already reached Mount Everest, but in the UK, the Netherlands and other countries and regions, there have been farces of 5G base stations being set on fire. The reason is even more ridiculous and outrageous: "5G networks will spread the new coronavirus." The author can only sigh, "The fallen aristocracy is still alive in the 18th century."

Ma Jihua also commented on this matter: "China embraces the new technology and the new era, while Europe and the United States are nostalgic for the old glory. Many people in Europe and the United States oppose 5G construction based on their own interests, which has also led to the sway of 5G policies in some countries. The pace of 5G construction is worrying."

Burning base stations will not have any positive effect on the prevention and treatment of the new crown pneumonia epidemic. The number of confirmed cases of the new crown in Europe and the United States is still in a continuous upward period. Due to the impact of the new crown epidemic, some countries that originally planned to conduct 5G spectrum auctions have postponed the 5G spectrum auctions. Austria, Spain, and Portugal have successively announced the postponement of the original 5G spectrum auction time. France will also postpone the 5G spectrum auction originally scheduled for mid-April. The specific auction time is still uncertain. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the United States has also postponed the 3.5GHz CBRS spectrum auction from the original June 25 to July 23.

As global 5G construction has been affected to varying degrees by the epidemic, the Chinese government has successively introduced policies to accelerate 5G construction. On March 4, the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee held a meeting to emphasize the acceleration of the construction of new infrastructure such as 5G networks. Subsequently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the "Notice on Promoting the Accelerated Development of 5G", proposing 18 measures to promote 5G to give full play to its scale effect and driving role, and effectively support the high-quality development of my country's social economy. At the regular press conference in April, the National Development and Reform Commission further clarified the scope of "new infrastructure" and proposed to accelerate the deployment of 5G networks. With government policies "escorting", how can China's 5G development not be given wings?

The three major operators are making great efforts in 5G construction with the help of the "new infrastructure". So far, China has built more than 150,000 5G outdoor base stations. China Mobile plans to build 300,000 5G base stations in 2020. China Unicom and China Telecom plan to complete the construction of 100,000 base stations in 47 cities in the first half of 2020, and plan to complete the construction of 250,000 base stations nationwide in the third quarter of this year. It is expected that the number of 5G base stations nationwide will exceed 600,000 by the end of the year, achieving continuous outdoor coverage in prefecture-level cities, focused coverage in county towns and townships, and indoor coverage in key scenarios.

2020 is a critical period for the large-scale deployment of 5G base stations. With the proposal and implementation of the "new infrastructure" policy, 5G, as an important component of it, is expected to reach new heights. The continuous increase in the number of 5G base stations in China has shown the world the speed of China's 5G. This 5G climbing of Mount Everest has witnessed China's new "height" in the world's 5G.
