5G is here, and you can’t hide from it

5G has gradually entered our lives with the research and development of equipment manufacturers and the promotion of operators. In this high-speed era, the development and application of 5G adapt to the pace of social development and meet our higher living needs.

Recently, Australia banned Huawei from providing equipment for its upcoming 5G network deployment for "security reasons". Subsequently, Japanese media reported that Japan will ban Huawei equipment from entering the Japanese market. Why is it so frightening to talk about 5G?

Is 5G really that important to a country? Some industry insiders believe that 5G will push all mankind into the era of the fourth industrial revolution faster. So far, mankind has experienced three industrial revolutions. The changes brought to the world by the first three industrial revolutions have also made people understand a truth, that is, whoever takes the lead in technological revolutions such as science and technology and manufacturing will become a powerful country in the world. In other words, 5G plays a vital role in the progress of our society and the development of science and technology.

Equipment manufacturers are busy developing commercial technologies.

The development of 5G is inseparable from the technical support provided by network equipment manufacturers. In the process of 5G development, equipment manufacturers such as Huawei, Qualcomm, and ZTE have actively promoted 5G technology verification and standard formulation, dividing the overall technology verification and research and development into three steps. The first step of 5G key technology verification and the second step of 5G technical solution verification have been completed, and the third step of 5G accelerated commercialization is currently being promoted.

At present, Huawei has invested heavily in R&D, conducted in-depth research on 5G technology, and holds a large number of 5G patents. This year, Huawei established a digital transformation practice center and officially put it into operation, and carried out practical exploration and capability building of digital transformation with operators. In addition, Huawei will also build a unified digital platform, which will first be applied internally by Huawei, and then provide services to customers and industries after maturity, so as to achieve digital transformation and provide higher services for the development and progress of 5G. In addition, Huawei is preparing to enter Samsung's backyard to compete for the share of 5G network equipment in South Korea.

ZTE has the same "banned" fate as Huawei. But ZTE has made a lot of efforts for this. Less than two months after the "rejection order" was lifted, ZTE has shown signs of full recovery in terms of business progress and stock price performance. It also released the "Latest 5G and Chip Strategy" to increase chip research and development efforts. On August 6, ZTE successfully completed the third phase of the NSA 3.5GHz field test of the IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group, with a cell peak throughput of nearly 10Gbps, and all test cases passed at one time, fully demonstrating the business capabilities and maturity of ZTE's 5G system. So far, ZTE has successfully completed all test cases in the NSA 3.5GHz laboratory and field, and will carry out NSA 4.9GHz and SA test verification in the next step.

ZTE said it will officially launch 5G mobile devices in the second half of 2019 to enhance its 5G competitiveness. At the same time, ZTE has four core technologies in 5G solutions, namely antenna process solutions, hardware architecture solutions required for 5G, ZTE's intelligent algorithms, and improving heat dissipation through different heat dissipation materials and temperature control optimization. These four technologies are used to solve the difficulties and obstacles encountered by 5G.

In addition to the continuous research and development and support of domestic equipment manufacturers, foreign equipment manufacturers have also made outstanding contributions in the 5G field. Qualcomm has brought a threat to domestic equipment manufacturers in the field of 5G technology. In the rush to launch 5G chips, Qualcomm will take a series of measures. In order to gain a first-mover advantage in the next-generation mobile communication technology 5G network, Qualcomm has accelerated its layout. It announced that it will launch a system-on-chip platform with a 7nm process technology, which can be paired with the Snapdragon X50 5G modem.

Operators are piloting in many places across the country.

The development of 5G equipment manufacturers have provided us with strong technical support, but this is far from enough. In order to develop 5G better and faster, operators also play a vital role.

From the timetable given by China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, it can be seen that 5G network will start trial commercial use in the first half of next year and formal commercial use in 2020. At present, the three major operators have also started 5G network pilots in many popular cities across the country.

The first one we want to talk about is China Telecom. On June 26, the "5G Technology White Paper" was released, which elaborated on China Telecom's 5G "Three Clouds" target network architecture, and clearly stated that the SA networking solution will be adopted to achieve the coordination of 4G and 5G networks through core network interoperability. The first phase will mainly meet the needs of eMBB scenarios. Recently, China Telecom Hainan Company held a launching meeting for the "5G Large-Scale Network Construction and Application Demonstration Project" in Haikou. So far, China Telecom's 5G pilot network construction in Haikou and Qionghai has officially kicked off, which also marks the official launch of Hainan's 5G pilot network construction. China Telecom's 5G pilot cities are "6+6". It has been determined that there are 6 regions in Xiong'an, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Suzhou, Chengdu, and Lanzhou, and 6 more cities will be added.

Secondly, China Unicom released the "5G NEXT" plan in Beijing on August 13, announcing that it will carry out 5G trials in 16 cities this year, of which Beijing has been identified as the key city for 5G trials this year, and the other 15 cities are Xiong'an, Tianjin, Shenyang, Qingdao, Nanjing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Fuzhou, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Zhengzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, and Guiyang. It is expected that more than 600 experimental networks will be built, business application demonstrations and trial commercial use will be carried out in 2019, and it is planned to be officially commercialized in 2020. The next step will be to carry out cooperative trials in ten major industries such as industry, sports, video, and smart cities to enrich 5G applications.

Compared with the above two competitors, China Mobile is relatively ahead in the development of 5G. China Mobile said that it will build the world's largest 5G test network, officially announced the 2018 5G scale test plan, and jointly launched the "5G Terminal Pioneer Plan" with 20 terminal industry partners around the world. At present, China Mobile has promoted 5G scale trials in 5 cities, and it is expected that more than 100 5G base stations will be built this year, and 1,000 5G base stations will be built by the end of next year. In addition, China Mobile will adopt a "5+12" pilot, among which Hangzhou, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Suzhou, and Wuhan will be the first batch of 5G pilot cities, and 5G business application demonstrations will be carried out in 12 cities such as Beijing and Chongqing. Large-scale pre-commercial experiments are expected to be carried out next year.

The three operators have elaborated on the progress of 5G in their interim performance reports. Among them, China Mobile attaches great importance to investment returns and will make future investment plans based on the maturity of the 5G industry and business model; China Unicom has carried out a lot of 5G network demand analysis; China Telecom will gradually and focus on the precise investment and construction of 5G networks and start large-scale commercial use of 5G in a timely manner.

Domestic operators are constantly innovating and making progress in 5G. Foreign operators are also accelerating the layout of 5G. Japanese operators are developing "post-5G era" technology with a transmission speed of 100GB per second. The UK will carry out the first batch of 5G tests in some cities, and industry chain stocks may benefit. South Korean operators will announce the list of 5G equipment manufacturers, and Huawei may be selected. Ericsson successfully completed all NSA tests in the third phase of China's 5G technology trial. They are all making continuous progress for the development of 5G technology and strengthening the development and cooperation of 5G technology. Complete the commercial use of 5G as soon as possible to improve the country's technical level and international influence.

The government's bonus policy continues, 666

In addition to the efforts of equipment manufacturers and operators, local governments have also introduced relevant policies to support the better and faster development of 5G. In order to promote the comprehensive construction and commercial use of 5G, relevant ministries, local governments and the three major operators have learned that 5G scale testing and application testing have been piloted. Local governments have set 5G coverage timetables and accelerated infrastructure construction in an attempt to gain an advantage in this 5G race. Many places have also formulated corresponding industrial development plans around 5G.

As one of the first batch of 5G pilot cities identified by the National Development and Reform Commission, Chengdu has been keeping up with the pace of 5G development. As early as December 2017, China Telecom Sichuan Company took the lead in opening the first 5G pilot base station in Chengdu and completed 5G network-related tests under single-site conditions, laying a solid foundation for subsequent continuous networking tests.

In addition to the policy support from local governments, the country has also issued relevant policies for the development of 5G. On May 17, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission jointly issued the Implementation Opinions on Deepening the Promotion of Network Speed-up and Fee Reduction and Accelerating the Cultivation of New Momentum for Economic Development in 2018, emphasizing the acceleration of the development of 5G technology industry. Solidly promote 5G standardization, research and development, application, maturity of industrial chain and security support. Promote the integrated development of 5G and vertical industries, and prepare for 5G large-scale networking and application. On August 10, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the National Development and Reform Commission jointly issued the "Three-Year Action Plan for Expanding and Upgrading Information Consumption (2018-2020)", proposing to accelerate 5G standard research and technical trials, promote 5G large-scale networking construction and application demonstration projects, and ensure the launch of 5G commercial use.

According to the deployment of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, my country will realize 5G commercial use in 2020. The three major operators are accelerating the layout of 5G pilot projects. China Unicom (5.420, 0.00, 0.00%) will carry out 5G pilot projects in 16 cities including Beijing, Tianjin, Qingdao, Hangzhou, Nanjing, and Wuhan. China Mobile will carry out 5G field tests in five cities, including Hangzhou, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Suzhou, and Wuhan, and is expected to conduct large-scale pre-commercial experiments next year. China Telecom's 5G pilot cities are tentatively scheduled to be "6+6", including the previously determined six regions of Xiongan, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Suzhou, Chengdu, and Lanzhou, and will also expand the scope of the pilot to add another six cities.

The development of 5G technology will also bring great significance to the industry. From the national level, by investing in the 5G industry, it will have a certain driving effect on the entire communications industry. In the medium and long term, after the 5G network is rolled out, the technology and market characteristics of 5G will inevitably lead to the three operators entering into homogeneous services and low-price competition, which will further compress the profits of downstream companies in the entire communications industry, and may even cause the bankruptcy and transformation of some communications companies. Accelerate the progress of the information industry 5G will push all mankind into the era of the fourth industrial revolution faster and accelerate the progress of the future electronic information industry. So far, mankind has experienced three industrial revolutions. The changes brought to the world by the first three industrial revolutions have also made people understand a truth, that is, whoever takes the lead in technological revolutions such as science and technology and manufacturing will become a powerful country in the world.

The 3G and 4G eras have come to an end. The 5G era is coming. The door to the future digital economy and smart society needs 5G to open. The development and progress of 5G technology is inseparable from the technical support of manufacturers and the reasonable layout of operators. At the same time, policy support will also accelerate its better and faster development. We need to work together to enter 5G and understand 5G.
