Clearing 2G networks to create 5G networks for commercial use, the three major operators have differences, these may be related to you

Recently, there has been a lot of talk about telecom operators canceling 2G networks. Many netizens are concerned about: the 2G network has been cancelled, what should I do if the original 2G card cannot be used? Some netizens even complained about this! In fact, don’t complain or worry, because today we will explain it to you clearly in this article. After reading it, your doubts may be instantly relieved.

The latest progress on the cancellation of 2G network

According to media reports, a staff member of China Unicom revealed that China Unicom will shut down all 2G networks within two years and recommend users to upgrade to 4G networks. China Mobile and China Telecom have not yet made a clear statement on this matter.

The differences between the three major 2G/3G/4G operators determine the different arrangements for canceling 2G networks.

According to relevant professionals, 2G networks in foreign countries have begun to be gradually cancelled as early as last year. The time node for canceling 2G networks in my country is relatively late.

Currently, China Unicom has taken the lead in announcing that it will gradually and completely cancel its 2G network. China Mobile and China Telecom have not yet indicated a clear time node, which has a lot to do with their infrastructure:

  • Although the 4G network has been gradually rolled out, the 2G network also plays a very important role. They have different functions. The 4G network is mainly used to carry data transmission, while the 2G network actually carries voice calls. This explains why some netizens have reported that the 4G signal is clearly displayed, but when making a call, it becomes a 2G signal (that is, the network and voice cannot coexist).
  • 3G itself is an upgraded version of the 2G network and a transitional version, so the 3G network can replace the 2G network. However, China Unicom's WCDMA model in 3G technology has certain advantages and is relatively mature. China Mobile and China Telecom still mainly use 2G networks for voice calls.

Of course, in the 4G network era there is another voice call mode, that is, VOLTE mode (HD voice call), but this requires the support of the base station VOLTE mode. That is to say, if the surrounding base stations do not support VOLTE, then China Unicom will be downgraded to 3G calls, and China Mobile and China Telecom will be downgraded to 2G voice calls.

According to incomplete statistics, China Unicom currently has about 5 million 2G users, which makes it relatively easier for it to accomplish this task; China Mobile and Telecom have a relatively large user base, and the total number of 2G users may also be relatively large. In addition, both companies currently rely on 2G voice calls in many cases, so they may be later in canceling their 2G networks.

Of course, with the continuous improvement of VOLTE and the arrival of 5G commercialization (5G network commercialization timetable), 4G+5G will become the main theme one day.

How do we as users deal with this problem properly? What if the signal is not good?!

In fact, the main users of 2G mobile phones are still elderly users. Since China Mobile and China Telecom have not made clear arrangements to shut down their 2G networks, these users do not need to worry for the time being. As for China Unicom, there is still a certain period of time for implementation. Unicom recommends that 2G card users go to the business hall to switch to 4G network for free.

The upgrade of mobile networks is a normal technical node update. The cancellation of 2G networks will speed up the advancement of 5G networks. However, 5G networks will bring great differences to our lives: driverless cars, the Internet of Everything, and so on.
