Current status of Chinese domain names: low application level and potential security risks

Recently, at the Second China Domain Name Development Conference, Liu Yue, Chairman of the Internet Field of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, released the "China Domain Name Industry Development Report". He said that China is in the second place in the global domain name market and is a leader in the new generic top-level domain name field. However, the application level of domain names is still relatively low, and there are hidden dangers in domain name security.

China ranks second in the global domain name market, second only to the United States

Liu Yue first introduced the development of global domain names. He said that from the perspective of global domain name registrations, it is still growing rapidly, and the overall growth rate is faster than the growth rate of global GDP. The United States is still in a leading position in the world, and it is far ahead of China in terms of gTLD domain name market and spatial distribution. From the perspective of ICANN distribution, the United States accounts for nearly 80%.

In recent years, the global domain name trading market has been growing steadily. Liu Yue said that after statistics on the transaction prices of the TOP100 domain names, it was found that the main price range was between US$100,000 and US$500,000. This transaction price has gradually increased since 2012, which reflects that the high-quality resources of the entire domain name are becoming increasingly scarce, and capital has boosted the price of domain names.

In the global domain name market, China ranks second in terms of domain name registration volume or new domain name registration volume. In addition, from the perspective of the concentration of the domain name registration market, the distribution of top-level domain names and registrars is very concentrated, reflecting the characteristics of the winner-takes-all Matthew effect of the Internet.

The development of Chinese domain names is very fast and has expanded to cover the entire industry chain

Liu Yue pointed out that China is in a unique position in terms of new generic top-level domain names. Whether in terms of total registration scale or business innovation, China has its own unique features. In such a development process, the development of Chinese domain names has important opportunities. Although with the development of mobile Internet, people generally use APP, and it seems that the use of registered domain names has directly decreased. However, domain names still play an irreplaceable role in changes, brands, communication, and especially in the adaptation of voice in the future.

Liu Yue believes that whether from the overall demand drive of the Chinese market or from the enthusiasm of China for the application and registration of Chinese domain names after the opening of ICANN, there is a strong driving force and pulling force in China. With the development of new Chinese domain names, Chinese domain names have gradually expanded from registration to the coverage of the entire industry chain, including full life cycle services. The industry chain and industrial ecology are gradually improving, which has a great effect on technological innovation, maintaining national security, and maintaining the safe and stable operation of the Internet.

The level of domain name application in my country is relatively low, and domain name security deserves attention

At present, the application level of domain names in China is still relatively low. Liu Yue pointed out that the ratio of the number of websites to the number of actually registered domain names is about 1:7, which is relatively lower than many more mature top-level domains and mature Internet markets. In addition, the form of domain name services in my country is relatively simple, and the development in regional divisions is also very uneven, with a significant gap between the east, middle and west. In terms of domain names used for website building, they are still concentrated in several top-level domains with relatively high registration volumes, among which .COM is currently the largest. Liu Yue called for the industrial development of Chinese domain names to enable a higher application rate in new domain name fields.

In terms of second-hand transactions of domain names, Liu Yue introduced that China was relatively active from 2015 to 2016. With the introduction of innovative models in 2015 and 2016, the entire domain name transaction investment model and transaction are changing. After the entire domain name market experienced a surge in 2015, it began to enter a period of adjustment. The current focus of domain name development has gradually shifted from direct registration to the secondary market. my country should pay more attention to the second-hand transaction market, regulate it, and protect the rights and interests of users.

In terms of domain name security, Liu Yue said that important domain name systems still have security risks, and more than 60% of domain names related to national economy and people's livelihood have security problems. These security problems mainly come from several aspects, such as reliance on open source software, lack of necessary redundancy, poor security isolation, etc. In addition, in the past two years, DDOS attacks have increased significantly, and DDOS is also a problem that needs to be solved urgently.
