3GPP approves first 6G standard project: China Mobile leads, over 90 companies support

On September 12, a landmark 6G research project was approved at the 105th meeting of the 3GPP Service and System Technical Specification Group (SA) held in Melbourne, Australia.

The project is led by China Mobile and focuses on the research of 6G scenario use cases and requirements, and has received extensive support from more than 90 companies around the world. This progress not only marks the official launch of 6G standardization work, but also heralds the beginning of 6G network commercialization.

In the development of communication technology, the definition of business scenarios is crucial to the development direction of each generation of communication systems. It determines the basis of network performance, functional design and service capabilities.

China Mobile played a key role in the formulation of the 6G standards. It not only coordinated and managed the standard-setting process, but also guided the direction of technical discussions and took the lead in forming effective conclusions to ensure the orderly advancement and quality control of the standards.

In the 5G era, China Mobile has served as the reporter for wireless scenarios and requirements, network architecture standards, and has taken the lead in the design of system architecture for the first time. Entering the 6G era, the leadership of Chinese companies has been further advanced, demonstrating China's influence in the development of global communication technology.

The approval of the 6G requirements project has attracted widespread attention from the industry. The increase in the number of participating companies, as well as the participation of government departments, research institutions, vertical industries and terminal companies, demonstrates the breadth and depth of communication industry standardization in the 6G era.

In particular, the participation of satellite-related companies has increased from zero in the 5G era to 9 in the 6G era. This not only shows the expansion of the boundaries of mobile communication networks, but also indicates that future communication networks will be more diversified and integrated.

From the current discussion, 6G technology will focus on the integration of mobile communications, computing power, AI, communications and perception, the construction of an integrated network of space, air and ground, and new capabilities such as immersive communications. These are the key directions for the development of future communications technology. The integration and development of these technologies will bring users a richer and higher-quality communications experience.
