Promoting the large-scale development of 5G applications

By the end of last year, the number of 5G base stations in China exceeded 1.4 million, and the world's largest and most technologically advanced 5G network had been built; the number of 5G mobile phone terminals connected reached 518 million, and all prefecture-level cities, more than 98% of county towns and 80% of townships and towns achieved 5G network coverage... Not long ago, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced the latest report card of my country's 5G construction. The breadth and depth of 5G network coverage have been further improved, which has effectively promoted the information and communication industry to achieve a new leap forward and added a bright spot to the Chinese economy.

Behind the encouraging figures are real and tangible application scenarios. The latest achievements of 5G construction provide spectators outside the Winter Olympics with a new experience of 360-degree viewing, allowing patients in remote areas to enjoy "cloud-based diagnosis and treatment" and allowing children in rural schools to remotely share high-quality educational resources. Cloud-based services and online convenience also make remote equipment control possible in smart factories and make machine vision quality inspection on assembly lines more sensitive. At present, there are more than 10,000 5G application innovation cases nationwide in multiple fields such as information consumption, real economy, and people's livelihood services, covering 22 important industries in the national economy. 5G applications are becoming an important driving force for enabling thousands of industries to accelerate digital transformation.

The key is to stimulate new momentum for economic development with industrial digitalization and promote the large-scale development of 5G applications. In recent years, by increasing investment in new infrastructure and appropriately advancing the construction of 5G networks, the coverage of 5G networks has continued to expand. Whether from the perspective of investment effectiveness or from the perspective of accelerating the development of new momentum engines, the goal of "building to promote use" has become more urgent. It should be noted that while my country's 5G technology is currently taking root in various places and fields, there are still deficiencies in application effects, integration depth, and coverage areas. The promotion of 5G applications in different industries faces difficulties in technical integration and large-scale replication. It is urgent to coordinate the forces of all parties to accelerate the formation of a benign development model that combines construction and use.

Construction is the foundation for promoting use. We should steadily and orderly carry out 5G network construction, continue to increase the breadth of coverage in counties and towns, and also take targeted measures. By improving the depth of coverage in crowded areas such as transportation hubs and shopping centers, as well as in key industries such as industry and medical care, we will encourage the exploration of 5G integrated applications in these key areas and key fields, and expand pilot demonstrations to large-scale promotion, so as to explore the path to accelerate the large-scale commercial use of 5G.

To promote 5G applications, we need to make a fist. The main battlefield of 5G applications is to empower the real economy, which is long-term, complex and systematic. From a horizontal perspective, the digitalization levels and development stages of different industries and enterprises are not the same, and the needs vary greatly; from a vertical perspective, there are many links and long processes from technology research and development to industrialization. To meet the personalized needs of industry applications, it is urgent to strengthen the adaptation and support of 5G technology and standards to industry needs. To better promote 5G applications to empower the real economy, it is necessary not only for multiple entities upstream and downstream of the industrial chain to carry out key core technology research and development, and accelerate the development of multi-level 5G industry chips, industry modules and other related products to meet differentiated needs, but also for relevant departments to work together to increase support and guidance, so that breakthrough progress and mature applications can be accelerated and replicated and promoted to thousands of industries.

With the continuous growth of new demands for digital production, life and social governance, the development space for 5G applications is very broad. Seizing opportunities, taking advantage of the situation, continuously improving 5G network coverage, and accelerating the deep integration of 5G with thousands of industries will surely provide solid support for digital transformation, intelligent upgrading, and integrated innovation in various fields of the economy and society.
