Behind Gu Ailing's victory at the Winter Olympics: Communications people are silently persevering

7×24 hours uninterrupted protection

Communication support during the Winter Olympics is a big task, especially radio safety, information communication and network security during the opening mode of the Winter Olympics. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has made clear deployment and planning early on.

Before the opening ceremony, the radio management department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology coordinated and allocated more than 800 frequency resources for the performance team, TV broadcast, command and dispatch. The Beijing Winter Olympics Radio Security Command Center systematically sorted out the experience of radio security work in the first five opening ceremony rehearsals, further consolidated responsibilities, refined measures, and strictly enforced them, clearing up the problems found in the opening ceremony rehearsal one by one. Since 20:00 on February 3, radio security personnel have arrived at their work locations one after another, and have been at their posts for more than 24 hours before the opening ceremony.

According to statistics, the radio management department has deployed more than 200 radio support personnel, activated 21 fixed monitoring stations in urban Beijing, deployed 6 mobile monitoring points in the National Stadium, and 9 mobile monitoring vehicles in the surrounding area to carry out protective monitoring of key frequencies of the opening ceremony; 108 radio equipment security inspectors were stationed at the security checkpoints of the National Stadium and various remote venues to verify radio equipment entering the core area, strictly prevent radio transmitting equipment that does not meet the regulations from entering the core area, eliminate interference risks at the source, and intercepted a total of 19 sets of wireless microphones, walkie-talkies and other equipment without special labels.

During the security period, the Ministry's Cybersecurity Emergency Command Center organized the Communications Administration Bureaus of Beijing and Hebei, China Unicom, China Telecom, China Mobile, China Satellite Communications, China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, China Internet Network Information Center, Alibaba, Tencent and other units to conduct centralized video surveillance. All units in the industry stayed at the front line of security, stayed on duty, and carried out 7×24 hours of duty and emergency response and other security work.

China Unicom: Supporting every wonderful moment

As the only official communications partner of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, China Unicom has formed a communications technology operation support team of nearly 5,000 people. In the closed loop of each competition venue, there are busy figures of Unicom people.

The highest point of the Shougang Big Jump is 60 meters, the track is 164 meters long and 34 meters wide. The entire jump is exposed to the open air, and the high-altitude cables are complex, making the high-altitude operations more difficult. The China Unicom communication service team rooted here has also mastered some "aerial stunts".

Every morning, with the first light of dawn, the China Unicom team will start daily inspections, checking the equipment on each floor and the cables outside the building, whether the power supply is secure, whether the switches and APs are operating normally, etc. During the busy work, they once took a picture like this: the integrated wiring master, with his feet apart, stepped on the steel frame, laying the network cable with one hand, and finding the fulcrum with the other hand to maintain balance.

Communication optical cables and integrated wiring connect the entire venue like meridians, building a high-speed train for Winter Olympics information. The 5G network not only enables gigabit Internet access, but also provides stable signals no matter which scene is switched to, helping to support every wonderful moment of the Winter Olympics.

Telecom: 11 provinces work together to support Winter Olympics network security

China Telecom has formulated a detailed communications guarantee work plan for the Winter Olympics, clarifying 22 specific work tasks and measures in six categories, focusing on important areas such as Beijing and Hebei competition venues, important tasks such as digital trunking communications, important events such as serving the opening ceremony, and important businesses such as public communications and IPTV viewing. It has built a guarantee system with two locations and three competition zones covering the core area, the Beijing-Hebei area, and the entire network.

Taking into account the overlap of the ice and snow event with the Spring Festival holiday, and the characteristics of large-scale international events being held across provinces, multiple locations and multiple venues, China Telecom is coordinating the promotion of major event and holiday security, local and full network security, domestic and international security, key service security and full network operation safety, security and epidemic prevention, and firmly grasping the effective implementation of tasks and measures.

To ensure a good network environment for the National Stadium at the opening ceremony of the ice and snow event, China Telecom carried out base station optimization work at the Bird's Nest venue in advance to ensure that 5G/4G signals inside and outside the venue have no dead spots and full coverage; in addition, it also specially built an IPTV Tianyi HD video service intelligent analysis system to monitor the live broadcast channel in real time to ensure that the live broadcast of the program is transmitted smoothly, clearly and stably.

According to statistics, as of the opening ceremony, China Telecom had organized and completed nearly a thousand emergency drills for failures of basic network, submarine cable, core network, Tianyi Cloud and other related equipment, carried out comprehensive hidden danger inspections, inspected more than 1.92 million pieces of equipment, sorted out 1,975 key risk protection plans for the entire network, and uniformly dispatched 14 emergency communication vehicles from 11 provinces to Beijing and Hebei for support.

Mobile: 3 years, 8 companies, 237 venues, more than 300 people

As one of the providers of basic network facilities and communication services for the Beijing Winter Olympics venues, Beijing Mobile has started preparations for related support work since 2018. Over the past three years, Beijing Mobile has invested more than 300 people to open 237 base station venues, 3 training venues, and 22 non-competition venues to fully complete the construction tasks, and a 5G Winter Olympics support network covering venues, highways, airports, railways and other core event areas and major transportation hubs has been completed.

At the same time, around the Olympic venues and the Olympic Village, Beijing Mobile has designated 8 Winter Olympics security offices to provide timely and responsive Winter Olympics services to event personnel.

In addition to providing its own services, Beijing Mobile also uses 5G technology to empower all walks of life to host the Winter Olympics: building a visual service guarantee platform for the Chaoyang District Winter Olympics area to assist the Chaoyang District government in completing the Winter Olympics dispatch command, emergency security and epidemic prevention and control tasks; cooperating with the Beijing Emergency Center to use a 5G ambulance equipped with a 5G+ pre-hospital emergency rescue system to serve the special needs of the public during the Olympics.

Tower: Digital tower contributes to the smart Winter Olympics

In addition to the three major operators, China Tower has been silently undertaking the construction, operation and maintenance of communication towers, implementing the Olympic hosting concept of "green, shared, open and clean", coordinating the construction needs of the three major operators with Shouxin, Zhengtong and other units, deepening sharing, and intensively and efficiently building information infrastructure, achieving "simultaneous planning, simultaneous design, simultaneous implementation and simultaneous acceptance" with the main project.

In Beijing, China Tower has completed government-specific network signal coverage of more than 1.8 million square meters indoors and 23 outdoor macro base stations in nearly 10 venues, including the National Indoor Stadium, the National Stadium, the National Speed Skating Oval, the National Aquatics Center, and the Shougang Park, providing command support during the Games for units such as Zhengtong and Shouxin; in important areas, traffic routes, and around the entrances and exits of venues related to the Winter Olympics, more than 10 high points of towers are used to provide video information services for security and transportation; on alpine ski slopes and around venues, more than 10 sites will be used for meteorological support services and radio monitoring services during the Games.

In Hebei Province, China Tower has built 200 security protection points along the entire Beijing-Zhangjiakou High-Speed Railway, including 92 high monitoring points to Chongli Taizicheng High-Speed Railway Station to focus on ensuring the safety of the high-speed railway in the Chongli competition area; 6 forest and grassland fire prevention monitoring stations have been set up around the Chongli competition area, and combined with Chongli’s 73 local fire prevention points, real-time protection of the forest safety in the competition area is guaranteed to avoid fires; at the same time, 14 radio monitoring stations, 6 important checkpoints and security monitoring stations, as well as several special dispatching stations and meteorological monitoring stations have been set up in the core competition area to provide stable protection for the safety, meteorology, and organization and dispatch of the Chongli competition area.

In the three Winter Olympic competition zones of Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou, the China Tower Association and telecommunications companies overcame difficulties and built a total of 596 base station sites, achieving full 4G and 5G network coverage of the three major operators for 12 competition venues such as the National Indoor Stadium, National Aquatics Center, National Alpine Skiing Center, National Bobsleigh and Luge Center, and National Ski Jumping Center, 26 non-competition venues such as the Winter Olympic Village, and important transportation routes such as the Beijing-Zhangjiakou High-Speed Railway and the Beijing-Li Expressway. Communication towers were opened to serve various social parties such as Zhengtong, Shouxin, Meteorological, and Public Security, to help promote a smart Winter Olympics.
