The three major operators did not learn their lesson and announced that 5G messages would be charged. Has WeChat got a new opportunity?

With over 1.1 billion users, WeChat is China’s largest Internet social product.

To put it bluntly, WeChat is a product that is basically indispensable for both work and life. But who owns WeChat? WeChat is owned by Tencent, and Tencent is just a private enterprise.

Anyone who is familiar with the history of the development of the Internet industry knows that before Tencent WeChat, China Mobile's Fetion and Xiaomi's MiTalk both had the opportunity to become the top social networking apps in China. Unfortunately, history does not allow for assumptions.

China Mobile's Fetion was very popular, with more than 400 million users. When Fetion was launched, the SMS business still brought a lot of profits to operators every year, but China Mobile was probably afraid that Fetion would become too big and affect its own SMS business, so Fetion later went astray.

The failure of Mobile Fetion shows that the operators were not incapable of coming up with good ideas for consumer-grade Internet products, nor was it due to technical reasons, but rather a lack of foresight.

Fetion also tells us that it is impossible for any good Internet product to survive under the system of state-owned operators.

In summary, the company’s positioning was unclear, its will was not firm, its capabilities were not up to standard, and its execution was not strong enough. In the end, Fetion missed the mobile Internet boom and never had a chance to rise again.

Although China Mobile's Fetion was defeated, the three major operators obviously do not want WeChat to continue to occupy the throne of Internet social networking.

Why do the three major operators want to get rid of WeChat? It's very simple. WeChat is a free product. The reason why Tencent dares to make WeChat free is that Tencent uses the advantages of WeChat to promote other businesses, such as Tencent's games. Online games are now the bulk of Tencent's revenue.

Some time ago, the media reported that the 5G messages of the three major operators will be charged. As soon as this news came out, it immediately sparked heated discussions among netizens.

Everyone thinks that 5G short messages use data traffic, similar to WeChat messages before. A mobile phone sends a text message, which is then transmitted to another mobile phone via the Internet. Because everyone has already paid for the data traffic, WeChat messages are no longer charged.

But now, the three major operators have announced that they will charge for 5G text messages, which shows that they are still unwilling to give up their own interests. For this reason, netizens said that the failure of China Mobile Fetion back then really showed that they were unwilling to learn any lessons?

Mr. Chun has said before that Tencent is best at making a product perfect. What is perfection? It means constantly improving the user experience and eventually making users dependent on the product.

Compared with the current WeChat, the 5G messaging led by the three major operators actually does not have much substantial innovation. In other words, WeChat is now an Internet social product highly praised by Chinese people, and 5G messaging is inherently weak.

WeChat is a social network for acquaintances, that is, you can only send messages after adding contacts; 5G messages are mandatory, regardless of whether you know the person sending the message. Therefore, 5G messages are naturally a tool for marketing and harassing advertisements. Now, adding a fee for sending messages, are users being treated as fools? How can this product positioning beat WeChat? Chun Gongzi really doubts it!
