The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently held a national 5G industry application scale development on-site meeting and conducted research in Shenzhen and Dongguan, Guangdong. According to information disclosed by the three major operators, my country has currently opened more than 970,000 5G base stations.

China Mobile has currently opened more than 500,000 5G base stations, developed more than 250 million 5G package customers and more than 120 million network customers. Dong Xin, general manager of China Mobile, said that it will promote multi-frequency coordination and continue to forge a 2.6GHz, 4.9GHz, and 700MHz multi-frequency three-dimensional network. By the end of the year, more than 700,000 5G base stations will be opened, which is expected to account for more than 1/3 of the global 5G base station scale, and basically achieve good coverage of cities, county towns, key towns, and key areas across the country.

China Telecom and China Unicom have opened 478,000 5G base stations in total, and the 5G network covers all urban areas above the prefecture level and the core urban areas of developed counties across the country. Through joint construction and sharing, China Telecom and China Unicom have doubled the progress, coverage, bandwidth and speed. At present, the two parties have started the third phase of the project, and it is expected that by the end of this year, the scale of 5G shared base stations will exceed 700,000.

The network is the foundation, and the application is the key. On July 13, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Cyberspace Administration of China, the National Development and Reform Commission and other ten departments jointly issued the "5G Application "Set Sail" Action Plan (2021-2023)", which clearly stated that by 2023, the development level of 5G applications in my country will be significantly improved, and the comprehensive strength will continue to increase. Create a new ecosystem with deep integration of IT (information technology), CT (communication technology), and OT (operation technology), achieve a double breakthrough in the depth and breadth of 5G applications in key areas, build a dual pillar of technology industry and standard system, further improve the basic capabilities of network, platform, security, etc., and gradually form a situation of 5G applications "setting sail".

In terms of applications, the three major operators and various industries are deeply exploring 5G applications. Dong Xin said that China Mobile has expanded more than 200 industry-leading demonstration projects and more than 4,000 5G commercial projects, and has deployed 9 major industry platforms. In the future, it will promote scenario-based standardized solutions to achieve a rapid transformation from "model houses" to "commercial houses". By the end of the "14th Five-Year Plan", it will strive to cover more than one million enterprises and institutions.

Li Zhengmao, general manager of China Telecom, said that China Telecom has accelerated the construction of 5G customized networks. As of the end of June, it has provided 5G customized network services to more than 4,500 government and enterprise customers, and more than 360 customized network commercial projects have been successfully implemented.

China Telecom focuses on typical 5G industry application scenarios such as 5G+mining, 5G+steel, 5G+energy, 5G+electronics, and 5G+ports, and has carried out in-depth cooperation with many leading companies in the industry, including Skyworth, Shenhua Coal, Meishan Steel, State Grid Qingdao, Midea Group, and Wuhu Port.

China Unicom focuses on industries such as industrial Internet, healthcare, smart mining, and smart cities, and systematically plans scenario solutions such as digital R&D, intelligent manufacturing, networked collaboration, personalized customization, service extension, and lean management. It has created more than 300 5G lighthouse projects and promoted the replication of more than 2,000 projects.
