VIAVI releases latest report: 5G network has covered 1,336 cities in 2020

Recently, VIAVI Solutions, a provider of communications network testing services, monitoring and assurance solutions, released a report on the “Status of 5G Deployment”. This is the fifth year that VIAVI has released this report.

The report shows that despite the impact of the global epidemic, 5G network deployment has continued to grow over the past year, covering 1,336 cities around the world, with a growth rate of 350%. As of January 2021, more than 30% of countries in the world have deployed 5G networks.

Currently, 61 countries around the world have deployed commercial 5G networks, an increase of 80% since January 2020.

In terms of 5G coverage cities, the top three countries are: China (341), the United States (279) and South Korea (85). Among them, the number of 5G deployment cities in China has increased fivefold in one year, while that in the United States has increased fourfold.

In addition, the UK has deployed 5G networks in 54 cities, followed by Spain with 53 cities. Last year, 27 new countries joined the ranks of deploying commercial 5G networks, among which Canada, France and Thailand have ranked among the top ten in terms of city coverage.

“In 2020, as remote work, online education, and video chatting with friends and family became the new normal around the world, reliable network connectivity has become essential,” said Sameh Yamany, Chief Technology Officer of VIAVI. “The strong demand for faster speeds and higher bandwidth is driving service providers to continue investing in 5G technology.”
