When will 5G take off and cover more than 1 billion people worldwide by the end of this year?

2019 is the "first year" of 5G commercialization. Many countries, including South Korea and China, have announced the launch of 5G commercialization in this year. Since 2020, the speed of global 5G construction has continued to accelerate, especially in China, which has achieved stable control of the epidemic. The number of newly built and opened 5G base stations has exceeded 690,000, laying a solid foundation for further promoting 5G commercialization.

At present, as the number of 5G base stations continues to grow, the coverage of 5G networks is also rapidly increasing. According to the Ericsson Mobility Market Report, by the end of 2020, 5G will cover more than 1 billion people worldwide, accounting for 15% of the world's total population. By 2026, 5G will cover 60% of the world's population, and the number of 5G subscribers will reach 3.5 billion. Judging from this data, in just two years, the coverage of 5G networks has already formed a significant scale.

Looking at the global regions, 5G construction in East Asia and North America is relatively fast, followed by Europe, Southeast Asia and other regions. Industry insiders believe that with China, South Korea and other countries making advanced 5G commercialization, Europe, which is lagging behind in deployment, is expected to become the main source of growth in 5G base station construction in 2021 and the next two years. It is expected that by 2025, 5G development in China, South Korea, the United States, Japan, Europe, Southeast Asia and the Middle East will enter the initial maturity stage.

Of course, the continuous acceleration of 5G construction has led to a rapid increase in the population covered by 5G networks and a continuous increase in the number of contracted users. However, 5G network coverage does not mean that 5G signals can be used stably and efficiently, and signing up for 5G packages does not mean that you can enjoy a full 5G commercial experience. For now, countries still have a long way to go in improving the coverage completeness and stability of 5G networks.

In the future, after solving existing problems, with the increasingly complete 5G network coverage and the increasingly mature market system, 5G mobile phones, VR/AR, cloud games, ultra-high-definition video, etc. will be expected to become the main scenarios for 5G commercial use, and the 5G industry will usher in real prosperity and development.
