5G has just arrived, and 6G is on the way...but what will it look like?

On November 13, the website of the U.S. bimonthly magazine National Interest published a report titled "5G has just arrived, and 6G is already in preparation", saying that at the same time as 5G is coming, the technology industry is already laying the foundation for its eventual successor, 6G. The full text is excerpted as follows:

Throughout 2020, 5G networks have been rolling out across the United States at an accelerated pace, and at the same time, most major smartphone manufacturers are launching 5G phones. Samsung, LG, and other companies have launched the phones in 2020, and Apple finally launched its long-awaited 5G phone this fall.

While some worry that the networks aren't quite up to scratch yet, especially amid vetting of new equipment, 5G networks are expected to get more powerful over time, even as silly conspiracy theories have circulated claiming that 5G is dangerous or even caused the spread of the coronavirus.

The Telecommunications Industry Solutions Alliance is a governing body that "brings together the world's top information and communications technology companies to advance the industry's business priorities."

The alliance recently announced the addition of some "founding members" to its "Next Generation G Alliance", calling the alliance "an initiative that will advance North American mobile technology leadership in 6G and other areas over the next 10 years, while promoting the long-term development of 5G."

New members include Apple, Google, Intel, HP, Charter Communications, Cisco, Keysight Technologies, LG Electronics, MyVenetian, Mitre and VMware, among others. Existing members from the technology and telecommunications sectors include AT&T, Bell Canada, CIENA, Ericsson, Facebook, InterDigital, JMA Wireless, Microsoft, Nokia, Qualcomm Technologies, Samsung, T-Mobile, Telus, Telnyx, Uscellular and Verizon.

The alliance will meet in the coming days to form a steering group and working groups.

“Our founding members represent key industry stakeholders driving innovation in the mobile ecosystem,” said Susan Miller, president and CEO of the Telecom Industry Solutions Alliance, in making the announcement. “As part of the NextGen Alliance, they are demonstrating their commitment to setting the conditions for a leading future in mobile technology in North America.”

According to the announcement, the organization's goal is to "build a vibrant market foundation for future generations of mobile technology innovation in North America" and "establish North America's preeminence on the path to 5G and in the development of 6G."

According to a business analysis published by CNN in early 2020, no one knows exactly what 6G will look like in the early days, except that it will likely arrive in the 2030s and will be faster than 5G.
