Time flies, and in the blink of an eye, it has been a year since the 5G license was issued. After a year of construction and development, what kind of report card has China's 5G handed in? In the past year, what areas of 5G construction and development need to be strengthened? On the occasion of the first anniversary of the 5G license issuance, Communication World Omnimedia planned and organized a series of special reports to review and summarize the development of China's 5G in the past year. But reviewing and summarizing is not the purpose, but exploring the future development path of 5G is the key.

In the global 5G construction and development, China, the United States, Japan, South Korea and Europe are all heavyweight players. However, judging from the development in the past year, China is definitely leading and successful in 5G construction and development. Whether in terms of network construction or application practice, China is ahead of the world. It can be said that the world's 5G depends on China is not an exaggeration, but a fact.

In terms of the speed and scale of network construction, China has delivered a very good answer in the past year. Especially this year, although affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, the three major operators have not slowed down the speed of 5G network construction. This year is a critical year for my country's 5G network construction. At the beginning of the year, the three major operators set a goal of building more than 500,000 5G base stations throughout the year. According to the latest 5G data disclosed by the three major operators, as of the end of April, China Mobile has built 140,000 5G base stations, and more than 300,000 will be completed by the end of the year; China Telecom and China Unicom actively promote 5G co-construction and sharing. As of April, a total of 100,000 5G base stations have been opened, and 5G co-construction and sharing have been opened in 31 provinces across the country, realizing the official commercial use of 5G in more than 50 cities, and striving to complete the construction of 250,000 base stations across the country in 2020.

At the same time, the three major operators are also accelerating the construction of edge computing, cloud-network integration and other capabilities. In April this year, China Unicom launched the world's first MEC-scale commercial network, exploring the test practices of edge cloud application acceleration, computing power management and other scenarios, paving the way for the explosive growth of 5G cloud games, VR live broadcasts, 8K ultra-high-definition video and other services. Also in April, the three major operators released the "5G Message White Paper" and announced the joint launch of the 5G message service. In addition, China Mobile and China Broadcasting Corporation reached an agreement to start the joint construction and sharing of the 700MHz 5G network.

Judging from the implementation of 5G applications, the three major operators and their partners have achieved remarkable results in the development of 5G vertical industries, and 5G+ industry application practices have blossomed everywhere. The three major operators have launched 5G industry ecological development plans since the beginning of 5G development, such as China Mobile's "5G+ Plan", China Telecom's "Hundred Thousand Plan", and China Unicom's smart ecological strategic plan. Today, smart transportation, smart medical care, smart agriculture, smart parks, smart manufacturing, almost all industries and fields have 5G-based applications. Especially during the epidemic, 5G played a huge role, high-definition live broadcast, remote consultation, intelligent robots... In the fight against the new crown pneumonia epidemic, 5G technology has shown its prowess and become a "magic weapon" in epidemic prevention and control. Of course, the 5G cloud supervision of Vulcan Mountain, the 5G cloud live broadcast of Mount Everest, and the 5G holographic live broadcast of different places and the same frequency during this year's two sessions have also made 5G video applications deeply rooted in the hearts of the people. These 5G industry applications that have been implemented all demonstrate the achievements of China's 5G development.

In the terminal market, domestic mobile phone manufacturers are scrambling to launch 5G mobile phones of various models and prices. When the epidemic was at its worst, mobile phone manufacturers still insisted on "cloud" release. From February to now, dozens of 5G mobile phones have been released. With the improvement of 5G network construction and the refinement of operators' 5G services, it is estimated that the sales volume of 5G mobile phones in China will reach 150 million to 200 million this year. Moreover, an era of 5G pan-intelligent terminals will come, which are all positive results brought about by the rapid development of 5G in China.

In just one year, China's 5G development has performed well in both speed and height. Behind such achievements, in addition to the strong support of industrial policies, there are also the hard work and innovation of the entire industry chain, as well as the strong market demand. Since the issuance of licenses last year, both the national level, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and local governments have actively introduced 5G development policies, especially the introduction of the "new infrastructure" policy this year, which has played a huge role in promoting the rapid development of 5G. Of course, what makes 5G develop rapidly is the strong demand of the domestic market and the active innovation of the industrial chain. If policies are the "booster" of 5G development, then the huge market and innovation capabilities are the "engine" of China's 5G development. It is precisely with this powerful "engine" that China's 5G can not only develop rapidly today, but also create greater miracles in the foreseeable future.
