Huawei Mate X: The Future of the Future

Huawei Mate X: The Future of the Future

Looking back at the year 2019 that is about to end, the change in the form factor of mobile phones is a very important node for the smartphone industry. Recalling the switch from the button form factor to the touch screen era, the social habits and entertainment methods of users have been completely affected. This time, the mobile phone has developed from a full screen to a folding screen. The new mobile phone form factor transformation shows the maturity of new technologies. Perhaps, this will be another beginning of a change in our living habits.

Recently, Huawei and Samsung have released their own folding screen mobile phones. The difference is that Huawei Mate X uses an external folding solution, while Samsung Galaxy Fold uses an internal folding solution. It seems that one is inside and the other is outside, but there is a huge difference.

Open and close freely, seamless connection technology leads the "folding screen era"

When it comes to foldable phones, the most important thing is of course the folding technology. Huawei Mate X creatively uses an eagle-wing hinge structure to solve the problem of body gaps when folded; when unfolded, Huawei Mate X is equivalent to an 8-inch tablet with a thinnest point of only 5.4mm. Not only is it free to open and close, it also has excellent performance in terms of grip and aesthetics.

The awkward part about Samsung Galaxy Fold is that although it can be folded, due to technical limitations, it cannot be completely closed when folded, and a triangular gap is left. The thickness of Galaxy Fold when folded reaches 17mm, which not only sacrifices the aesthetics but also makes it difficult to carry.

The front and rear cameras share the same module, a clever design that stems from strong technical strength

Of course, thanks to Huawei's eagle-wing hinge design, Huawei Mate X not only shows full beauty and technical strength in folding form, but also shows a lot of imagination in camera solution. From the picture, we can see that Huawei Mate X is equipped with a 40-megapixel Leica quad-camera module. Whether it is unfolded or folded, users can take pictures with a set of quad-cameras; when taking selfies, just fold and flip the phone, and use the secondary screen on the back of the phone to take selfies. The advantage of this is that it not only saves body space, but also improves the screen-to-body ratio and screen integrity, and also upgrades the selfie effect.

In contrast, the Samsung Galaxy Fold has a dramatic scene. The whole machine is equipped with 6 cameras, 1 on the front, 3 on the back, and 2 when unfolded, but they can only work independently and cannot form effective coordination. Although the number of cameras on this machine is amazing, the highest pixel is only 16 million, and because of the design of the front camera, the integrity of the screen has to be sacrificed, and the screen will have a "bangs" when unfolded.

New interactive experience makes applications more " parallel "

Huawei Mate X has made a lot of innovations in applications and interactions for the use scenarios of foldable screen phones. For example, in split-screen mode, you can run different apps on the left and right sides of the screen when you unfold the phone. And its parallel view function also supports split-screen display of a single app, just like when you are browsing Taobao, you can scroll through the product list on the page while looking at its details. It is difficult to achieve this experience with ordinary phones.

To be fair, foldable screen mobile phones are actually a problem beyond the scope of the current industry. No one has an accurate evaluation system or standard answer, but judging from the first batch of products, it is a test of the imagination of each manufacturer for the future and their solid R&D and design capabilities. Huawei Mate X reflects Huawei's deep accumulation and big factory attitude in industrial design, technology R&D, engineering capabilities and other aspects. It can be said that Huawei Mate X, with its strong innovative R&D capabilities, is leading the development of future mobile phone forms and opening the next era of smart phones!
