5G has become a hot topic among people, and now 5G is on the verge of commercialization. This morning, according to CCTV news, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will issue 5G commercial licenses today. At present, my country has a commercial basis in the 5G mid-frequency band (2.6Ghz and 3.5Ghz). It is predicted that with the continuous advancement of policies, operators will accelerate the deployment of 5G networks, or officially realize commercialization before October 1.

What is 5G and what is the significance of issuing 5G licenses?

5G network is the fifth generation of mobile communication network, with a peak theoretical transmission speed of 1GB per 8 seconds, which is hundreds of times faster than the transmission speed of 4G network. For example, a 1G movie can be downloaded in 8 seconds.

With the birth of 5G technology, the era of sharing 3D movies, games and ultra-high-definition (UHD) programs with smart terminals is coming to us.

The main goal of 5G networks is to keep end users connected all the time. 5G networks will support far more devices than just smartphones - they will also support smart watches, fitness bands, smart home devices such as Nest-style indoor thermostats, etc. 5G networks refer to the next generation of wireless networks. 5G networks will be a true upgrade of 4G networks, and their basic requirements are different from wireless networks.

According to well-known industry insiders who revealed to OFweek Electronic Engineering Network, the issuance of 5G licenses marks the firm determination of the policy side to promote the development of 5G, and also declares China's open and cooperative attitude towards 5G construction. It hopes to promote collaborative cooperation in the global industrial chain and help alleviate the current concerns about the uncertainty of China's 5G commercialization process.

Review of 5G Commercialization Progress

The "Information and Communication Industry Development Plan (2016-2020)" previously released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology clearly stated that 5G commercial services will be launched in 2020. According to the 5G promotion work deployment proposed by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and other departments and the 5G commercial plans of the three major operators, my country will launch the second phase of 5G network testing in 2017, conduct large-scale trial networking in 2018, and on this basis, start 5G network construction in 2019, and officially launch commercial services as early as 2020.

In September 2015, China Unicom announced the next-generation network architecture CUBE-Net 2.0. It is expected that the IoT core private network based on NFV will become part of the 5G core network. 3GPP officially approved the 5G SA standard. Subsequently, Ericsson, Intel, China Mobile Research Institute and Jiangsu Mobile took the lead in successfully demonstrating the inter-vendor 5G New Radio (NR) interoperability that is in line with the 3GPP independent networking (SA) standard, accelerating the industry maturity of the 5G New Radio standard network.

The three-party cooperation test was completed in Ericsson's Beijing laboratory, mainly testing the 5G new air interface interconnection test (IoDT) that complies with the 3GPP SA standard, and realizing different manufacturers' data transmission on the 100MHz bandwidth of the 3.5GHz frequency band. According to reporters, the test used Ericsson's 5G new air interface base station and Intel's 5G new air interface terminal (MTP) prototype.

At 11:18 on June 14, 2018, the 80th 3GPP plenary meeting held in San Diego, the United States, officially approved the freeze of the independent networking function of the fifth-generation mobile communication technology standard (5G NR). Together with the non-independent networking NR standard completed in December 2017, 5G has completed the first stage of full-function standardization and entered a new stage of full industry sprint.

On September 5, 2018, China Unicom released the "5G+Video" promotion plan, which will open up more scene applications in the 5G industry chain. China Telecom also cooperated with ZTE to complete the 5G test network phase test in Xiong'an and Suzhou, exploring multiple industry applications. Prior to this, the three major operators had disclosed pilot work plans in dozens of cities across the country. Among them, China Unicom will carry out 5G pilots in 16 cities including Beijing, Tianjin, Qingdao, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Wuhan, Guiyang, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Fuzhou, Zhengzhou, and Shenyang. China Mobile will carry out 5G field tests in five cities including Hangzhou, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Suzhou, and Wuhan. China Telecom will use Xiong'an, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Suzhou, Chengdu, etc. as pilot cities. On March 30, 2019, the 5G network of the *** administrative region was built in Shanghai and began trial use.

What are the 5G chip manufacturers in the world?

It is reported that among the world's top six 5G chip manufacturers, China accounts for three, including two from the United States, three from China, and one from South Korea.

Important countries around the world are actively building 5G. Currently, South Korea's Samsung is very advanced in 5G technology. Samsung has invested a lot of money in the research and development of 5G chips, and its investment cost exceeds that of Huawei. Qualcomm demonstrated the world's first 5G chip Snapdragon 855 last year and is also a leader in 5G technology. Although Intel lags behind other manufacturers in 4G technology, it is in a leading position in 5G technology.

Huawei, MediaTek and Unisoc are the largest 5G manufacturers in China. MediaTek, like Qualcomm, also develops 5G chips. Huawei is very powerful and is currently in a leading position in the world, winning numerous orders. Huawei alone accounts for 20% of the 5G patents. It is understandable that China is actively promoting 5G.
