Verizon Business recently launched its first commercial 5G private network in the United States, providing high-speed indoor or outdoor connections for enterprises and government departments. 5G private networks eliminate the need for businesses to compete with others for speed on public networks and help enable data-intensive applications that use computer vision, augmented reality and machine learning to improve productivity. Verizon has been trialing private 5G with several customers and is working with companies like Microsoft and Amazon. The private 5G network, managed by Verizon, will keep all cellular traffic on the customer’s premises for increased security, while authorized remote users will still be able to access applications. Verizon has been working with Corning, WeWork, Tyndall Air Force Base and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. Verizon is using Corning radios and Ericsson core equipment for the initial deployment and is willing to use equipment from Nokia and Samsung at a later stage. Several companies are also turning to 5G to upgrade their office networks for faster speeds and rearrange conference rooms to accommodate more video calls while maintaining social distancing before employees return to work. |
