It is reported that the Chinese Academy of Sciences plans to spend 30 million yuan this year and use 18 months to deploy a 5G chip industrialization project for the next-generation mobile communications in order to build an innovation chain of 5G chips and network key technologies with independent intellectual property rights.

Specifically, the goal is to complete the product development and application verification of 5 to 6 RF front-end and baseband chips and network core technologies.

Yan Qing, director of the institute's Science and Technology Promotion and Development Bureau, said that as the core technology of the entire 5G network, 5G chips must be our own, otherwise when the 5G era comes, we may still be controlled by others.

Director Yan pointed out that 5G core chips such as ADC, DAC, and baseband chips have broad industrial demand, but face the risk of embargo, which highlights the significance of independent products.

It is worth mentioning that in November last year, 3GPP determined that the Polar code led by Huawei and ZTE would be the coding scheme for the 5G control channel, becoming a key part of the 5G standard.

Currently in the field of mobile baseband, Qualcomm, Intel, Huawei, VIA and others hold core technologies, among which Qualcomm has obvious advantages, and the strength of the "Chinese team" still needs to be strengthened.
