Rui Headlines | Explore Ruijie Ethernet Color Light: The key advantage of achieving 20W+ indoor light

The most direct users of the campus network - Internet users - are most concerned about network performance, that is, how fast the network is and whether it is laggy when used.

Let's look at PON first. It uses time-division multiplexing technology, bandwidth sharing, and requires splitting. This means that the total bandwidth must be allocated to each user according to certain rules. When the number of campus network users increases, or the business volume of a certain user suddenly increases, the bandwidth available to each user will decrease accordingly, and the network speed may slow down. For applications that require a lot of bandwidth and low latency, such as video conferencing and telemedicine, PON technology may not be able to cope with it.

Let's look at Ethernet color light technology. It uses wavelength division multiplexing ( WDM ) technology to provide exclusive bandwidth without splitting. Through wavelength division multiplexing , Ethernet color light provides each user with 1G, 2.5G or even 10G independent bandwidth. It not only ensures that everyone can enjoy high-speed network connection, but also meets the different bandwidth requirements of different businesses.

The difference in bandwidth mechanisms between the two can lead to significant differences in specific application scenarios. For example, when conducting remote video teaching in a hospital operating room:

The images from the operating room camera need to be projected on the display screen at the teaching site in real time for doctors to watch in real time. The transmission from the operating room to the site is horizontal traffic transmission, which has extremely high requirements on the real-time performance of the network.

Since PON uses a bandwidth sharing mechanism, all traffic must be forwarded through OLT (Optical Line Terminal). This means that the image data of the operating room needs to be transmitted to the backend first, and then transmitted back to the site, which not only increases the transmission delay, but also may affect the image quality. At this time, the PON solution is difficult to meet user needs.

In contrast, Ethernet color light technology has more advantages in this case because it has exclusive bandwidth from access switches to passive aggregation, which can give full play to the advantages of high bandwidth and low latency to ensure real-time transmission of images.

Next, let's talk about another type of "user" of the campus network - the network operation and maintenance managers. They are also the group of partners I deal with the most. They all have the same demands: operation and maintenance should be simple, the technical difficulty should not be too high, and the cost should be well controlled. In the face of these, PON and Ethernet color light also have obvious differences.

PON technology is a two-layer architecture - Ethernet + PON. Using the PON solution requires two management systems . Since most operation and maintenance managers are from Ethernet technology, they also need to hire specialized technicians, which invisibly increases the operation and maintenance costs. At the same time, the PON solution uses a manufacturer's private protocol, which is bound and not open, and it is easy to cause problems due to the split of multiple protocols . In addition, the shared bandwidth mechanism of PON technology will also complicate troubleshooting and location.

The use of Ethernet color light technology will make operation and maintenance managers much more comfortable, because it uses a unified Ethernet architecture , continues the existing operation and maintenance knowledge system of most information center personnel, and greatly reduces the cost of network construction and use. The unified Ethernet architecture also means unified protocols, and its equipment is open and standard, so there is no need to worry about compatibility issues . In addition, the middle layer of the Ethernet color light solution is passive, so the operation and maintenance pressure of the weak current room is reduced; it also supports a centralized management platform, the status of the entire network is clear at a glance, and real-time monitoring, troubleshooting and performance optimization have become much simpler.

In addition , the scalability and flexibility of the network are also important factors for enterprise operation and maintenance managers to consider when selecting a network. In this regard, the inherent splitter limitations and bandwidth sharing mechanism of PON will lead to its insufficient scalability. Ethernet Color Light supports a variety of network transmission and flexible networking methods. It can be customized according to the actual needs of the campus network without the need to rewire to the weak current room.

At the beginning of 2024, Ruijie Ethernet Color Optical Network achieved more than 100,000 indoor users. In just half a year, it achieved more than 200,000 indoor users. It is widely used in education, medical care, enterprise parks and other industries, and has received positive experience feedback from customers.
