5G network speed has shrunk? Q3 saw a year-on-year decline of up to 39%

Recently, Ookla, a network connection speed testing service provider, released the Speedtest Intelligence survey report for the third quarter of 2021. The report shows that the average 5G network download speed in the third quarter was 166.13Mbps, a decrease of about 13% from 206.22Mbps in the same period last year, while the average upload speed was 21.08Mbps, a decrease of 39% from 29.52Mbps in the same period last year.

Norway, which ranked first last year with a download speed of 549.02 Mbps, dropped to 426.75 Mbps this year, ranking second. South Korea's download speed increased from 411.31 Mbps last year to 492.48 Mbps this year, ranking first.

The top ten also includes the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Sweden, mainland China, Taiwan, China, and New Zealand.

It is reported that the reason for the decline in average network speed is that the network speed calculation method in some countries and regions has been changed to 5G network specifications, which has caused interference in the dynamic adjustment of radio waves, causing the average upload and download speeds of the network to be affected.

Ookla predicts that after 2022, the speed of 5G networks in various regions around the world will gradually return to normal as the spectrum usage in various regions is adjusted. In addition, compared with the same period last year, the number of countries that have enabled 5G network services in the world has reached 99, and in the third quarter of this year, the number has increased by 13, reaching a total of 112.

The survey report shows that currently more than half of the Internet population still access the Internet through 2G and 3G network services, and these countries and regions may skip the development of 4G networks in the future and directly enter 5G network services.
