Why 5G and IoT security is more important than ever

[[421462]]

The convergence of IoT and 5G is a game changer for many reasons. The proliferation of IoT devices, coupled with the rollout of 5G networks, creates a whole new set of opportunities and possibilities for edge technologies.

5G’s lightning-fast connections and low latency are the advances needed for intelligent automation in the digital future. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), driverless cars, digital reality and blockchain will benefit from this convergence.

However, this intersection reveals new security requirements for 5G and IoT technologies. Despite gradual advances in IoT security, most connected machines and devices are built with security as a secondary consideration, with basic minimum standards being “good enough.” It is truly a miracle to project massive scale on eSIM platforms, supported by trust-based networks and applications, without hardware security for authentication. Given the increasing importance of data security in today’s world, providing additional layers of device and network-level security is critical, especially for critical applications such as government, defense, and healthcare.

To achieve this, it is essential to use an eUICC platform that is fully compliant with GSMA standards and designed to eliminate common vulnerabilities in 5G and IoT security. Such a solution should also have the following features:

  • Cryptographic certificates in each eUICC allow device operators to load certificates from their private chain into the eUICC during production. These can be used to bring hardware-level security to your IoT applications and keep the initial TLS key exchange away from the internet.
  • Private IPSEC VPN can route application data directly from the carrier PGW to your internal applications through a tunnel. This direct-to-door capability is ideal for sensitive government, health or financial data.
