600,000 new 5G base stations will be built in 2021

2020 is a critical year for the large-scale commercial use of 5G. Although many companies have postponed their start of construction and some construction activities have had to be suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as the domestic epidemic prevention and control situation continues to stabilize, 5G commercial construction has also begun to accelerate in an all-round way.

On December 29, at the 2021 National Industrial and Information Technology Work Conference held recently, Minister of Industry and Information Technology Xiao Yaqing stated that in 2021, the construction and application of 5G networks will be promoted in an orderly manner, 5G coverage in major cities will be accelerated, joint construction and sharing will be promoted, and 600,000 new 5G base stations will be built.

Xiao Yaqing said that 5G construction should be used as a driving force to coordinate the deployment of data centers and computing facilities. At the same time, 10 key industries should be focused on, 20 typical industrial application scenarios should be formed, industrial 5G private network pilots should be carried out, and 5G millimeter wave frequency planning for some frequency bands should be released in due course.

In addition, the MIIT will also promote network optimization and upgrades, push for gigabit coverage to exceed 200 million users, continue to rectify vicious competition in areas such as campus telecommunications markets and commercial building bandwidth access, increase efforts to rectify apps that infringe on user rights, and complete the testing of 1.8 million apps.
