Quantum computing will impact businesses despite misunderstandings, study shows

Nanotechnology, transportation, cybersecurity and data analytics are just a few of the areas that quantum computing is expected to impact. However, while the applications for quantum computing seem endless, businesses are still deciding whether this new level of computing power is just a pipe dream or a future reality.

Recently, foreign technology media TechRepublic conducted a survey on quantum computing, covering the level of understanding of quantum computing and whether quantum computing will be used as a service.

The results show that quantum computing remains a mystery to most respondents, with 90% saying they have little to no knowledge of the topic. Only 11% of the 598 respondents said they have an excellent understanding of quantum computing.

More than 58% of respondents said quantum will have a significant impact on the computing industry. Exactly which sectors will see this impact is unclear. According to 42% of respondents, the IT sector will benefit the most, followed by the pharmaceutical and financial sectors at 14% and 12%, respectively. Other industries cited included healthcare, energy, telecommunications, and manufacturing.

All industries are likely to benefit from quantum computing as this new level of computing power allows data to be consumed and processed faster while consuming less energy. However, when asked, "Will your company consider quantum computing as a service?", 53% were unclear about the prospects of the technology. 26% of respondents said they do consider quantum computing as a service, while almost a quarter (21%) do not.

As the growth of traditional computing models approaches a bottleneck, we need to find a new computing model to solve problems that traditional computing cannot solve. This new computing model is quantum computing.

It is understood that the speed of quantum computing can be 10,000 or 100 million times faster than the current computing speed. A quantum computer can complete a computing task that takes a supercomputer several years in just one second. It is believed that with the large-scale commercial use of quantum computing, the traditional models of many industries will be completely overturned.
