The UK finally stops using Huawei 5G equipment!

According to Reuters, British Secretary of State for Digitalization, Culture, Media and Sport Dowden announced that the UK has decided to stop using Huawei equipment in 5G construction. At the same time, Sky News reported that Dowden said that the UK will stop purchasing new Huawei equipment from December 31, 2020, and will dismantle all Huawei 5G equipment used in the past by 2027!

Dowden said that the removal of Huawei's 5G equipment would delay the commercialization of 5G in the UK by one year.

In response to the Johnson government's decision to stop using Huawei equipment in 5G construction, Huawei's UK spokesman Brewster said the decision was "disappointing." He pointed out that "Huawei's future development in the UK has been politicized."

Britain, wavering

In May 2019, Marc Allera, CEO of British telecom operator, said: "Our 5G launch is delivered by multiple suppliers, and Huawei is an integral part."

Neil McRae, chief architect of British Telecom, once said publicly, "There is only one real 5G supplier now, and that is Huawei. Other suppliers should learn from Huawei."

On May 30, 2019, Huawei and British Telecom officially launched the commercial use of 5G networks.

The series of actions taken by the UK are like timely help to Huawei, and Huawei is also constantly improving the UK's 5G network construction.

In order to consolidate the British market, Huawei was approved to establish a research and development and manufacturing center in Cambridge, UK in June 2020. It is understood that the center, as the global headquarters of its optoelectronics business, will invest 1 billion pounds in the first phase, equivalent to about 8.77 billion yuan, and "further consolidate Cambridge's position as a global innovation center."

But what cannot be ignored is that British Prime Minister Johnson once said that by 2023, the participation of Huawei 5G equipment in the UK's 5G infrastructure will be reduced to zero.

However, the Daily Telegraph exclusively reported on the 4th that the Johnson government expects to gradually exclude Huawei equipment and technology from the construction of the UK's 5G network as early as this year. The reason is that the British intelligence agency, the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), believes that the use of Huawei's technology and equipment poses a "security risk."

According to the Daily Telegraph, British government officials are currently drafting a proposal to stop using Huawei equipment in 5G network construction within six months at the earliest, while speeding up the removal of already installed Huawei equipment.

According to reports, the reason why the British government suddenly changed its 5G policy was that GCHQ believed in a report that the US sanctions on Huawei would force the latter to use untrusted technology, which might lead to potential risks that could not be controlled.

Regarding the UK's attitude, Chinese Ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming said that changing orders overnight and banning Huawei will not only damage the UK's image of openness, business-friendly, free and transparent, but will also damage the UK's independent national image.
