Huawei's Yang Xiaoning: Building a secure digital society through openness, collaboration, and development

[The Hague, Netherlands, May 29, 2019] The Mobile 360 Conference hosted by GSMA was held in The Hague. The theme of this conference was 5G network security, which promoted the consensus of Europe and the world on the 5G network security assurance testing and certification system. Many operators, equipment manufacturers, government and industry regulators from around the world attended the conference.

Yang Xiaoning, Director of Huawei's Global Cybersecurity and User Privacy Protection Office, delivered a keynote speech at the conference titled "Building a Secure Digital Society in Openness, Collaboration, and Development". He shared the current trend of rapid global 5G development and the work done by the industry in 5G security standards and 5G security verification mechanisms in the face of cybersecurity challenges. Yang Xiaoning said that Huawei actively responded to and supported GSMA's efforts to promote the establishment of a unified network security testing and certification standard in Europe and the world, the Network Equipment Security Assurance Scheme (NESAS), hoping to ensure that all network equipment and services can achieve a consistent level of security through unified security standards.

Yang Xiaoning delivered a keynote speech at the event

Yang Xiaoning said: "It is understandable that 5G security issues are highly concerned. However, network security issues are technical issues, and technology should be left to technology. Whether a network is secure or not should be based on facts, and facts should be based on verification, and verification should be based on standards. Huawei hopes to work with the industry to develop clearer standards and rules and build confidence in the industry. Huawei has always insisted on actively participating in the international standard system, complying with network security laws and regulations, and working with industry partners to build an open, transparent, win-win, and dynamic global ecosystem."

Yang Xiaoning believes that security is a common problem for all technologies in their infancy. Problems must be solved during development and faced with a positive attitude. The entire industry should unite and work to build industry confidence and create a secure digital world for the next generation. He said: "Security starts with our values and beliefs, including integrity, capability, responsibility, trustworthiness, openness and transparency. Huawei will actively cooperate with stakeholders in security technology, standardization, certification and verification, vulnerability and threat information. Huawei has six security verification centers around the world. The newly launched Brussels Security Transparency Center is a platform for close cooperation and communication between government agencies, technical experts, industry associations, standards organizations and other parties to jointly seek solutions to balance development and security in the digital age."

At the conference, Huawei released the white paper "Huawei and the industry work together to ensure 5G security", which explains that 5G is the natural generational evolution of wireless access technology from 2G, 3G, and 4G. From a technical perspective, 5G has enhanced network security capabilities based on the security protocols of previous generations of mobile communications and is more secure than previous generations of wireless access technology. Looking to the future, based on the achievements made in 5G security, Huawei calls on the entire industry to maintain an open, transparent, and cooperative attitude, continue to improve 5G security-related laws and regulations, verification and assurance mechanisms, and enhance network resilience as well as security standards and technologies to cope with 5G security threats and challenges.
