How network maintenance personnel can solve IP address conflicts

I believe that every maintenance personnel will encounter IP address conflict problems in actual work. Many people do not know why IP address conflicts occur, nor do they know how to solve them. IP address conflicts may occur in weak current equipment, switches, hard disk recorders, and computer network equipment. Let us look at this knowledge together today.

IP Basics

IP address is the Internet Protocol address, which uses a unified address format to assign an address to each unit host in the network for accurate access by other devices in the network.

IP address types are divided into public addresses and private addresses. Public addresses are addresses assigned to public networks that can directly access the Internet. Private addresses are unregistered addresses that can be used within each organization. We often use private addresses for company network configuration, network cameras, and switch router configurations, such as: 192.168.1.1; 10.0.0.1 are all private addresses.

Causes of IP address conflicts

Generally, network address conflicts are private address conflicts. We use private addresses in each LAN, but many people are not very clear about these concepts. For example, they are not familiar with basic names such as subnet mask and default gateway. Therefore, they may have repeated settings during configuration, or failed to modify the automatic address allocation settings in the routing device, which will lead to IP address conflicts. Another situation is that when personnel use temporary IP debugging in the LAN, some commonly used IP addresses will have conflicts with the IP addresses of old devices in the original system.

Network IP conflict example

There are about 100 network device nodes in a local area network. These devices are distributed in a six-story building. The network nodes on each floor are connected through 100M twisted pair cables and secondary switches. Each switch on each floor is connected to the routing switch through Gigabit optical fiber.

The private IP address used by this LAN is: 10.168.0.0 network segment, the default gateway is 10.168.0.1, and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. The static IP address allocation method is adopted. When users in the network encounter system problems, they will install the computer system by themselves, and then modify the Internet IP address by themselves. In this way, IP address conflicts will often occur in the LAN, which greatly increases the workload of network maintenance personnel.

How to solve it

Now that the reason is very clear, how to avoid it? Then we need to bind the user's computer physical address and IP address. This is generally effective. If the users in the LAN will not modify the IP address and steal other people's IP, this method can solve the problem.

However, this method is not the most thorough solution. To completely solve the IP conflict problem, we not only need to bind the assigned IP address and MAC address, but also need to bind all idle IP addresses to the virtual MAC address. In this way, users can neither change the IP address nor impersonate other people's addresses. At the same time, IP addresses other than the bound ones cannot be activated.

Therefore, adding or reducing network terminals within the LAN requires authorization from the network administrator. This not only effectively avoids IP conflicts, but also ensures the safe and stable operation of the network and effectively prevents viruses from invading at will.
