Awesome, my network

China's broadband speed used to be disappointing, and the actual broadband speed was far from the nominal speed. There were some professional speed test websites that periodically released the speed arrangements of some countries around the world, and China's ranking was often outside the top 100. In fact, after years of rapid economic development, China has also been involved in high-end technology, especially network technology. A number of excellent companies have emerged, which can compete with companies in developed countries in Europe and the United States. Domestic network construction is also in full swing, and the performance of broadband speed is asymmetric with the level of development of these technologies. Fortunately, in February, the world-renowned speed test platform Ookla announced the speed test global index. The average download speed of China's wired broadband was 69.64Mbps, ranking 17th in the global wired broadband ranking list, and the average download speed of wireless broadband was 33.57Mbps, ranking 25th in the world. This ranking is still very good, much better than the previous ranking of more than 100. It also shows that China's network construction level has made great progress in the past two years. Awesome, my network! So, how did China's network develop so rapidly?

This article believes that there are several reasons:

First, the government supervises network construction. As early as two years ago, the State Council proposed to "increase network speed and reduce fees" and put forward a series of reform measures for operators. In particular, in the 2018 government work report, it repeatedly mentioned continuing to increase network speed and reduce fees. As the saying goes, "If you want to be rich, build roads first." If China wants to continue to maintain high-speed economic growth and enter the ranks of developed countries, it needs to build information highways. The government pays special attention to the speed and quality of network construction. The government controls the transformation and construction of network operators at the macro level, and adjusts at the micro level so that the general public can enjoy more benefits. Asking network operators to "speed up and reduce fees" is undoubtedly cutting off their own financial resources. It must be implemented in a mandatory way by the government to ensure the effect. In the past two years, the State Council has repeatedly emphasized the implementation policy determination of "speeding up and reducing fees" on various occasions, so that operators can completely give up their fantasies and implement the government's strategy in a down-to-earth manner.

Secondly, the rapid development of network technology. Two years ago, single-port 40G/100G optical modules and equipment were rare, either extremely expensive or not stable enough to use. Now, 40G/100G has almost become the standard configuration of data centers. In the IDC computer rooms of operators, the network is almost all 40G/100G interconnected. The price of 40G/100G single ports is also plummeting. China has become the market with the largest demand for 40G/100G in the world and has built the world's largest 100G network. The three major operators are actively transforming the existing network, while reducing fees, continuing to increase network bandwidth. As early as 2016, the three major operators launched 400G network testing to prepare for the future commercial use of 400G networks. In the past two years, there have been centralized procurement projects for 400G network equipment. It is an industry consensus that 400G products will be commercially available on a large scale in 2019. The network scale of operators is very large, with high-speed core networks and edge access networks. Introducing 400G into the core network can greatly improve the data exchange efficiency of the network center. At the same time, the access network needs to be transformed. 100M/1000M access gradually enters 1G/10G access. Now there are network cards that support 10G/25G. This will increase the overall network bandwidth and avoid bottlenecks at any node. China's network scale is huge, and there are many old equipment. This is the difficulty of transformation. It is impossible to abandon all of them at once and rebuild them all. There is no such financial and human resources. It can only be transformed gradually. First, the core network and transmission network are transformed, and the interconnection single port bandwidth reaches 400G, or even 800G, thereby improving the overall network bandwidth. This is the wired network part.

Third, the development of wireless network technology. From 2G to 3G, 4G, and now to 5G, which is being tested vigorously, the development speed is getting faster and faster. It feels like it only took a few years to transition from 3G to 4G, and now it is about to switch to 5G. China's network companies have long been involved in the standard design of 5G, and their wireless technology level is already at the forefront of the world. Especially in 5G technology, China's network companies have many patents, even more than traditional network giants Ericsson and Qualcomm, and have a voice in the international arena. China is also a country keen on promoting 5G commercial use. The three major operators have also successively carried out 5G tests and conducted pilots in some areas (generally for half a year or more). If the pilot effect is very good, it can be deployed on a large scale after the observation period ends. For example: China Mobile will carry out 5G scale experiments in 17 cities in 2018, trial commercial use in 2019, and 5G will go to the market in 2020; China Unicom will conduct 5G pilots in 12 provinces and cities in 2018 and conduct off-site trials. Other operators are also testing and experimenting intensively. China's 5G construction is in sync with developed countries in Europe and the United States, and is even moving a little faster.

Finally, the prosperity of China's Internet industry. In the past 20 years, China's Internet development has achieved outstanding results. The new economy accounts for a large proportion of GDP and has penetrated into people's lives. People have long been inseparable from the Internet. China has produced many Internet star companies, which have great influence internationally. Many companies are also listed on the US stock market to make money from Americans. The great development of the Internet is inseparable from the network. Only by building a high-speed and high-quality network can we provide a good network access experience, especially in China, the country with the largest number of Internet users. The development of Internet companies has promoted operators to strengthen network construction, and Internet companies must also build their own data centers. The development of the Internet industry has forced China's network level to a new level.

My network is awesome! China has led the new generation of network construction, and has also brought China's network construction level in line with developed countries. Many new network technologies are from Chinese network companies. In terms of wired broadband and wireless mobile communications, network speed and quality are constantly improving, and new network technologies are constantly playing a role. The 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China has drawn up a blueprint for the development of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, which proposed to build a network power and made strategic deployments on a series of major issues related to the construction of a network power. "Network power" is the requirement put forward by the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China for China's network industry. It is necessary to build several high-level and secure networks, and to develop comprehensively from network chips, network equipment, technical standards and other aspects. Although China's overall network level has made great progress compared with the past, it still lags behind developed countries and needs to develop rapidly to become a real network power.
