There is no need to wait until 2020. Now the world's first 5G-enabled Wi-Fi hotspots have appeared in Australia. According to foreign media reports, Australian telecommunications company Telstra has installed 5G hotspots in the 5G Innovation Center in Southport on the east coast of Australia using its 5G test network. However, although the innovation center has begun to use 5G-enabled modems as hotspots, users who connect to the free Wi-Fi will not experience 5G speeds. This is not only due to the limitations of Wi-Fi throughput, but also because the connecters are still using 4G phones.
Telstra says its 5G network will be able to reach speeds of up to 3Gbps based on testing at launch, but users using Wi-Fi will be limited to about 100Mbps - which is still very fast for public Wi-Fi. It is still difficult to see the implementation of 5G applications in the short term. As operators around the world vigorously carry out 5G testing and public 5G demonstrations, the competition for the 5G market will continue to accelerate. However, until operators, telecommunications infrastructure companies, mobile phone manufacturers and regulators around the world collectively decide to deploy 5G standards, it is probably difficult to see the implementation of 5G applications. |
