What is 5G messaging service?

5G messages are RCS messages (Rich Communication Services & Suite), also known as rich media communications. They are a communication method proposed by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association in 2008. They can generally be divided into "RCS enhanced SMS" for end users and "RCS commercial rich media messages" for businesses and enterprises.

Specifically, it can integrate communication services such as voice, messaging, status bar, location services, etc., and realize various rich applications of App on the SMS interface through various functional interfaces, providing richer multimedia services and giving enterprises, businesses and customers a new interactive experience. For example, through RCS on mobile phones, people can more conveniently obtain information with pictures and texts to meet their service needs in travel, entertainment, shopping and other aspects.

What upgrades will traditional SMS services see?

It is reported that 5G messages are built based on the GSMA RCS UP standard, which can realize the multimedia and lightweight messaging and realize the interactivity of industry messages by introducing MaaP technology.

In this regard, Dong Xin, deputy general manager of China Mobile, also expressed three views:

First, 5G messaging is the common choice of global operators . It is understood that the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) has reached a general consensus to include RCS as a mandatory function of 5G terminals, and accelerate the rapid popularization and scale development of services through unified technical standards, unified business presentation, and unified functional experience.

Second, 5G messages are an upgrade and innovation of experience and services . Based on inheriting the telecommunications-level service quality of SMS services, 5G messages will bring customers new experiences such as multimedia messages, business messages, intelligent messages, interactive services, security and anti-counterfeiting, and realize "message as a service".

Third, 5G messaging requires the joint cooperation of upstream and downstream industries . The vigorous development of 5G messaging is inseparable from the joint efforts of terminal manufacturers, platform service providers, content providers and other industry sectors. It also provides a broad stage for partners to innovate cooperation models and jointly build a cooperative ecosystem in technology research and development, application promotion, and results transformation.

Wang Guoquan, deputy general manager of China Telecom, said that China Telecom will take the release of the white paper as an opportunity to work with industry partners to create a mutually beneficial and win-win new 5G industry ecosystem and promote the rapid development of rich media messaging.

On the one hand, China Telecom will strengthen ecological cooperation and continuously improve user experience. It will strengthen cooperation with all parties in the industry chain, unify technical interfaces, terminal display methods, and business specifications, realize network and platform interconnection, and jointly create a high-value message ecosystem with network interconnection, business interconnection, terminal sharing, and consistent experience.

On the other hand, China Telecom will strengthen innovative cooperation and jointly enrich 5G message applications. It will accelerate the development of 2C and 2B application innovations, provide multimedia message interactions for individual users, make communication smarter, more efficient and more colorful; provide corporate customers with new digital interactive services based on rich media, explore more business application scenarios, and make greater contributions to promoting the digital transformation of enterprises.

Fan Yunjun, deputy general manager of China Unicom, said that 5G messaging is an important part of the 5G ecosystem and digital economy, carrying the important mission of transforming and upgrading traditional SMS services, and also contains an important opportunity for the evolution and iteration of information service models. Through this release, we expect all parties in the industry chain to jointly build a 5G messaging ecosystem, upgrade the messaging service experience of mobile phone users, and boost the industry application value of information services.

In addition, ZTE, Huawei, Xiaomi, Samsung, OPPO and others have fully affirmed and expected the 5G messaging service, and stated that they will bring a new communication service experience to users in the future, and build the 5G messaging service into a 5G universal information and communication service that supports multiple terminals, covers a wide range of users, and empowers multiple industries, so as to promote the value enhancement of messaging services and drive the prosperity and development of the global 5G industry ecosystem.

According to industry forecasts, the market prospect of RCS messages is expected to reach 100 billion by 2021. Driven by the three major operators, RCS may become the main entrance to smartphone scenario services and may also become the earliest application of 5G. The imagination space is huge.
