Is 5G really useless?

Indeed, the 5G network we are using now seems to be no different from the 4G. We can watch Douyin, read articles, chase TV series, etc., and even play mobile games without noticing any difference.

But in fact, 5G is not useless, but its advantage in transmission speed still needs the cooperation of APP service providers, and these service providers have not kept up yet. For example, it used to be said that it only takes tens of seconds to download a movie, but now it takes several minutes, just like 4G? That's because although the download speed of your mobile phone has increased, the uplink speed of the movie server has not changed. It's like you have enlarged your faucet several times, but the water pipes entering your home have not become larger. No matter how big your faucet is, it can't become a fire hydrant. It's the same principle.

In addition, apps that require large amounts of data have not yet been developed, short videos and live broadcasts on TikTok have not yet been released in 4K, movie websites have not yet reached Blu-ray quality, and immersive high-definition VR games have not yet been launched. Even WeChat is limiting the size of pictures and videos, and transmissions over 25MB are not allowed. This makes the ultra-high transmission speed of 5G in our hands useless and does not demonstrate its superiority.

No more than 25M

Why haven't these APP service providers followed up even though 5G has been out for almost two years? There are mainly three reasons.

First, it takes time to follow up. 4G appeared around 2013, but short videos and live broadcasts did not become popular until 2016, with a delay of three years. Second, the current 5G coverage is still very poor. Even in cities, most places still have no 5G signals. At this time, the first 5G APP to launch can only become a martyr, not a pioneer. Third, the current data traffic costs are still relatively high. If 5G really runs at full speed, it is estimated that your one month's data traffic will be used up in a few days.

In addition, the powerful Internet of Everything (IoE) of 5G is difficult to achieve in a short period of time. What is IoE? It means connecting tables, chairs, benches, bicycles, pots, pans, stoves, hair dryers, chickens, ducks, pigs, dogs, and cows to the Internet for remote intelligent control. Although controlling these devices does not require too much traffic, they still occupy access ports.

One 5G base station can allow 1 million devices to access at the same time, which is unimaginable with 4G. This lays the foundation for the Internet of Everything. However, the access chips are still too expensive, and the access fee is not cheap, so everyone feels that it is still not cost-effective. In addition, the network coverage is not enough, so it cannot be realized in a short time.

Therefore, 5G is not useless, but the comprehensive supporting facilities have not caught up. It needs the cooperation of all links to bring out its powerful functions. If you use today's 4G to use it more than ten years ago, there will not be much difference from the 2G mobile phone at that time. You can only read some texts on the Internet, there are very few pictures, and there are no mobile movie websites at all; the games are all mosaic blocks moving around, and the photos taken by the mobile phone can't even see the nose and eyes clearly, so the sending speed is not much different from others.

Mosaic Game

But if you use a 2G mobile phone from more than ten years ago today, you probably won’t be able to do anything except make calls and send text messages! Therefore, 5G is just a highway, and no matter how well the road is built, your tractor won’t be able to run very fast.
