The Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission: The number of active IPv6 users reached 528 million

Recently, a relevant official from the Cyberspace Administration of China answered reporters' questions about the "Notice on Accelerating the Large-Scale Deployment and Application of Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6)". He mentioned that as of May 2021, my country's IPv6 address holdings reached 59,030 blocks (/32), ranking first in the world. The number of active IPv6 users in my country reached 528 million, accounting for 53.39% of the total number of Internet users, significantly improving the carrying capacity and service level of my country's Internet, and effectively supporting the rapid development of emerging fields such as 4G/5G, cloud computing, big data, and artificial intelligence.

The notice mentioned that by the end of 2023, an advanced and independent IPv6 technology, industry, facilities, application and security system will be basically established, forming a benign development pattern driven by the market and mutually promoted, with the number of active IPv6 users reaching 700 million and the number of IPv6 connections in the Internet of Things reaching 200 million. The proportion of mobile network IPv6 traffic will reach 50%, and the proportion of metropolitan area network IPv6 traffic will reach 15%. By the end of 2025, a leading IPv6 technology, industry, facilities, application and security system will be fully established, with the number of active IPv6 users reaching 800 million and the number of Internet of Things IPv6 connections reaching 400 million. The proportion of mobile network IPv6 traffic will reach 70%, and the proportion of metropolitan area network IPv6 traffic will reach 20%. It will take about five years to complete the evolution and transition to an IPv6 single stack, and IPv6 will be fully and deeply integrated and applied in all industries and departments of the economy and society.

The full name of IPv6 is Internet Protocol version 6. Internet Protocol is translated as "Internet Protocol". Therefore, IPv6 is the sixth version of Internet Protocol. The biggest problem of IPv4 is the lack of network address resources, which seriously restricts the application and development of the Internet. The use of IPv6 can not only solve the problem of the number of network address resources, but also solve the obstacles for various access devices to connect to the Internet.

Compared with IPv4, IPv6 has the following advantages:

●Using smaller routing tables allows routers to forward data packets faster.

●Added enhanced multicast support and stream control, which is very beneficial for multimedia applications.

●Added support for automatic configuration. This is an improvement and extension of the DHCP protocol.

●Has higher security.

●Has better expansion capability.

●Has better header format.

At present, my country's backbone network, mobile core network, metropolitan area network, Internet backbone direct connection points and other network infrastructure fully support IPv6 and carry IPv6 services; more than 50% of cloud service available domains support IPv6, and the content distribution network (CDN) IPv6 service acceleration capabilities have covered major provinces and cities across the country; mainstream mobile terminals in the market already support IPv6, and basic telecommunications operators such as China Telecom, China Mobile, and China Unicom have also completed the IPv6 upgrade and transformation of all qualified existing home gateways; the IPv6 traffic of LTE core network and fixed network exceeds 10Tbps, and the development of IPv6 is moving to a new level.
