China's 5G smartphone shipments reached 108 million units, but how many people use 5G?

my country has always been the world's largest smartphone market, and it is estimated that this status will not change much for quite some time. But there is a limit to the number of markets to be played, and competition is essential. Although the development of 5G is still in progress. But according to a recent market research report, as of September 2020, China's 5G smartphone shipments exceeded 100 million. As newer and faster bandwidths become more popular, 5G devices will increase exponentially.

According to a report from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, 14 million smartphones were shipped in my country's smartphone market in September alone. This accounts for 60% of the total smartphone shipments that month. This shows that the popularity of 5G smartphones in my country is gaining attention. In addition, in September alone, 26 new 5G models from different manufacturers were launched. This is 44% of the total number of new mobile phones that have entered the Chinese market.

Shipments to date have reached 107.7 million units, with 167 5G smartphones entering the market. The total number of smartphones shipped in the Chinese market last month was 23.334 million. More than half of this value (especially 60%) are 5G devices. Of course, the popularity of 5G smartphones in our country is reaching new levels. Soon, most of the mobile phones entering the Chinese market will have 5G connectivity.

Since the beginning of the year, 218 million smartphones have been shipped in our market. However, the market has also received another 8 million non-smartphones. This brings the total number of mobile phones in our market to 226 million. Looking at the smartphone segment, the market received 108 million 5G phones. This means that about 47.7% of the total number of smartphones this year are 5G devices.

China has more than 150 million 5G users, but 50 million of them don't have 5G phones

13.769 million 5G mobile phones were sold in 2019 and 2020. In eight months, 93.679 million 5G mobile phones were sold, totaling 107 million.

As of August, the total number of 5G users of China Mobile and China Telecom has exceeded 150 million, while only about 100 million 5G mobile phones have been sold in my country. Obviously, some of these users are not 5G users.

According to OFweek data, this number is less than the number of 5G users announced by China Mobile and China Telecom. If the number of 5G users that China Unicom has not yet announced is added, the actual number of 5G users will far exceed 50 million 5G mobile phone sales.

According to the operator, by the end of this year, my country is expected to have built 600,000 5G base stations, which is still far from the number of 4G base stations.

How many users can use 5G signals?

According to the above data, we have users and mobile phone data, but what about base stations? 600,000 base stations are still in the plan, and we won’t say whether they will be available by the end of the year. According to the current scale of 4G, according to statistics, in 2019, the 4G base station foundation has reached 5.44 million. Even with the number of 4G base stations, we dare not say that it is 100% covered. Then 600,000 5G mobile phone base stations can only cover some parts of large cities. In some second-tier and third-tier cities, it is good to have 5G signals in the central area, at least for now.

But how many people in second- and third-tier cities may have 5G mobile phones and have been "tricked" into activating 5G, but because there are no 5G base stations in their area, they are actually only using 4G signals. This number cannot be counted and has not been counted.

In more remote rural areas, users who have been enabled for 5G may not even have 5G mobile phones, let alone 5G signals.

The real 5G users are 5G mobile phones + 5G package users + 5G signals. In comparison, there are currently about 107 million mobile phones, 150 million users, and less than 600,000 base stations. The coverage area is limited, so not everyone can access the 5G network.
