Slow Internet speed? These 8 methods can completely solve it

Here are 8 ways to fix a slow Internet connection.

1. Troubleshoot hardware issues

Before you curse your ISP, give your modem and router a quick reset (i.e. turn them off and back on) to see if that helps. Check other computers in your house to see if their internet is slow, too, if the problem is only on one computer and not the router or modem. Run these troubleshooting steps to see if it's a hardware problem. Then, once you fix your router or modem, you'll be browsing the web quickly again.

2. Try a new DNS server

When you type an address into your browser, your computer uses something called DNS to look it up and convert it into a computer-friendly IP address. But sometimes, the servers your computer uses to find information can have problems, or be down completely.

3. Repair your Wi-Fi signal

If you use WiFi, you may find that your router and internet are fine, but your wireless signal is weak, causing slowdowns. In this case, you may need to reposition, adjust, and boost your router with a few tips.

4. Call your Internet provider

If you've completed all of the necessary troubleshooting steps and your internet is still slow, it's time to call your internet service provider to see if the problem or line malfunction is over.

5. Check your speed

Sometimes, your internet is slow because you're just paying for slow internet. Go to your provider's website (or give them a call) and find out what plans you have. Then, go to the website and do a speed test. If the numbers match what you're paying for, your network is working fine, and the best way to speed it up is to upgrade.

6. Disable plugins and applications

If your hardware appears to be in working order, see if there are other programs that are hogging your connection. For example, if you're using Thunder to download files, regular web browsing will slow down. You should also try installing extensions like AdBlockPlus or FlashBlock, which block some bandwidth-hogging ads, animations, and videos that can drain your connection.

7. Optimize the Web for Slow Connections

Troubleshooting slow internet can take a while, and you still need to browse. Or maybe you're in a cafe or on a plane and your speed is so slow, there's nothing you can do. In that case, it's time to optimize your network for slower connections: use the mobile or HTML versions of your favorite sites, disable images, and use features like Opera Turbo.

8. Find a new provider

If your ISP can't help you (maybe they don't offer the speeds you want, or maybe you're just tired of their poor customer service), then it's time to switch to a new ISP broadband provider. However, you may have trouble with this because there is a stranglehold on the market with ISPs that stifle competition and give consumers few choices. This may mean switching to a different type of provider, such as cable, DSL, or fiber optic. Before you pick up the phone, you should do some research. Check out our guide to choosing the best providers in your area and make sure they offer the type of speeds you want.
