What is IPv6 conversion service?

IPv6 Translation Service is a stateful IPv6 and IPv4 network address and protocol conversion service provided by Alibaba Cloud.

Through the IPv6 conversion service, servers with public IPv4 addresses can quickly provide access services to users on the IPv6 network side.

Main functions of IPv6 conversion service

The main function of the IPv6 conversion service is to complete the conversion of IPv6 and IPv4 network addresses, that is, to complete the function of NAT64. As shown in the figure below, the IPv6 client sends the data packet to the instance IPv6 address of the IPv6 conversion service through the IPv6 network. After the IPv6 conversion service completes the conversion of the destination IP and source IP of the data packet, the data packet will be forwarded by the instance IPv4 address of the IPv6 conversion instance through the IPv4 public network to the server with an IPv4 public network address on the user side.

Since the communication between the IPv6 conversion service and the IPv4 server on the user side is through the IPv4 public network, the original IPv4 business, whether in the IDC room, Alibaba Cloud, or other public clouds, can use the IPv6 conversion service to quickly provide support to IPv6 users as long as the server has a public IPv4 address.

How to use IPv6 conversion service

Creating an IPv6 translation instance and adding mapping entries to the IPv6 translation instance determine which server and port on the IPv4 network side the data packets from the IPv6 client will be forwarded to. These two steps can be easily configured through the graphical interface of the IPv6 translation service console.

In addition, if your server is in mainland China and provides domain name access services, you also need to apply for registration of your domain name. Users who use IPv6 conversion services can apply for registration without purchasing any cloud servers on Alibaba Cloud and enjoy the extremely fast Alibaba Cloud registration process. Registration requires submitting an application on the registration console. After the registration is completed, don't forget to resolve the domain name to the instance IPv6 address of the IPv6 conversion service.

Practical Demonstration

The goal of the demonstration is to resolve a website domain name to the instance IPv6 address of the IPv6 conversion service, log in to the dual-stack server (disable IPv4 outbound and inbound traffic), and verify whether a website domain name can be accessed normally on the dual-stack server.

Step 1: Log in to the dual-stack server and disable IPv4 inbound and outbound traffic.

Verify that IPv4 inbound and outbound is disabled.

I pinged the IPv4 address of a website found on the Internet, but it was not connected.

Step 2: Create an IPv6 conversion instance

Log in to the IPv6 Conversion Service Console and select "Create IPv6 Conversion Instance"

On the purchase page, select the region where the IPv6 conversion service is located, instance specifications, instance bandwidth, and purchase duration, click "Buy Now", and complete the payment.

Return to the IPv6 conversion service console, where you can see the IPv6 conversion instance you just created. Note the instance IPv6 address of the IPv6 conversion service.

Step 3: Add IPv6 translation mapping entry

Wait for the entry status to stabilize.

Step 4: Log in to the server and verify whether you can successfully access a website

Verify connectivity from the dual-stack server to the instance IPv6 address of the IPv6 translation service.

Modify the host file of the server and resolve the domain name of a website to the instance IPv6 address of the IPv6 conversion instance.

Open a website domain name through a text browser for verification.
