China’s OTT industry achieved impressive performance in 2018

Lin Xiaoping, Vice President and General Manager of Juniper Networks Greater China

Lin Xiaoping introduced that Juniper Networks has made great progress in China's OTT market in the past year. What is gratifying is that they have expanded their cooperation with domestic mainstream OTT companies not only in China but also in Europe, Asia and America, and the market development speed has far exceeded expectations. At the same time, due to the in-depth cooperation with OTT companies, Juniper Networks has introduced many new products into the Chinese market in addition to traditional products.

Luo Jun said that by cooperating with domestic OTT companies, Juniper Networks will be closer to understanding customer business, and in this market, Juniper Networks needs to have more advice to help customers truly understand their pain points. For Juniper Networks, it means using the best equipment and the best technology to accomplish what OTT companies want to do.

Jing Youhao added that from a technical perspective, OTT is an Internet company, and Internet companies are engaged in software and applications, so they are better at development. In the past decade, the new generation of network changes has been driven more by super-large-scale Internet companies. The reason is that after the popularization of smartphones around 2007, social media, e-commerce, video and other companies need more Internet traffic to drive development. Their demand for the network is more that they have the ability to develop and improve software, and hope that the hardware can support software improvements. Juniper Networks can not only provide higher performance in hardware, but its Junos software is also open, with many APIs for OTT customers. They can use their own software to develop and adjust on Juniper Networks' software platform, including automation, simplification in routers, the concept of Controller, etc., to improve network efficiency. "Currently, among the major OTT companies in the United States, Juniper Networks is dominant in router deployment." Jing Youhao revealed.

Lin Xiaoping also mentioned that Hong Kong, China, performed very well this year, mainly in three aspects. First, new business grew a lot, and the SDN products promoted last year were more popular with customers; second, Juniper Networks acquired an optical company BTI in 2017, and its business took off and opened up many new customers; third, the industrial environment was good, and Hong Kong and the mainland had many new projects to cooperate, maintaining a high economic momentum.

Localized security is more reliable

In the interview, Lin Xiaoping revealed that Juniper Networks has increased its investment in security. He listed three things: First, Juniper Networks' largest security R&D center in the world is in Beijing. It is precisely because of this team that Juniper Networks' security products are able to meet the special requirements of domestic users and market guidance policies. "In addition to meeting the security needs of local customers, the R&D team in China also ensures that our products are flexible, such as the Chinese interface, and understands and responds to the security needs of local users more quickly."

Secondly, Juniper Networks once acquired NetScreen, a company that focuses on security. Currently, both NetScreen and NorthStar teams have been incorporated into the Security R&D Center. After the integration, the security R&D force is extremely strong.

***, Lin Xiaoping believes that security is about overall security. Some companies only make security products and can only provide some basic public security functions, which is actually one-sided. Juniper Networks has its own comprehensive network product lines such as routers and switches. Therefore, when Juniper Networks starts to provide security products, its security capabilities and levels are closer to customer needs.

Jing Youhao also told reporters that in the future, Juniper Networks will develop security products for the entire network, providing end-to-end security strategies at the application layer, including future 5G and IoT, from access devices to core devices, including hardware and software. Another point is that OTT has a security strategy, and we have also made a layout in hardware.

Juniper Networks has more cards to help customers with digital transformation

As the tide of digital transformation sweeps across China, Lin Xiaoping believes that digital transformation is developing faster than expected. He explained that the convenience of mobile payment has spawned a variety of applications, such as the implementation of shared bicycles, which has made people aware of the value of big data. Since the transition period of big data applications is particularly short and the upgrade period is particularly fast, manufacturers need to be able to provide customers with more constructive suggestions.

When talking about the future development plan of network vendors, Lin Xiaoping believes that current network vendors, including Juniper Networks, cannot be limited to just producing hardware, and must keep up with the development of software such as SDN and Contrail. He gave an example. A customer previously deployed Juniper Networks' Contrail product. As a result, in just four months, the original department of more than 70 people was reduced to 13 people, and the cost was greatly reduced. In the past, the operation and maintenance of the four-layer network and two sets of equipment all relied on manual labor. Now Juniper Networks provides automated operation and maintenance. The products are energy-saving, financially-saving, highly accurate, and high-speed. While improving efficiency, it also helps companies reduce labor costs.

Ralph Candiloro, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Asia Pacific, Juniper Networks

Ralph Candiloro concluded in the interview that the biggest difference between Juniper Networks and other industry competitors in 1996 was that it predicted that the Internet era would come and the scale of the Internet would be unimaginable. "So at that time we had already made plans for data and related content, which was like a new revolution and innovation for us." Ralph Candiloro said, "China is a market that Juniper Networks attaches great importance to. We hope to work with more customers and partners to achieve connectivity with the world through simplified, automatic, flexible and secure networks."
