Huawei introduces AI into the telecommunications industry to build an autonomous network that never fails

On April 18, 2018, at HAS2018, Huawei released the SoftCOM AI solution architecture, introducing AI technology based on the all-cloud network architecture, striving to create an autonomous network that automatically optimizes and heals itself and "never fails". Huawei has set off a new round of network transformation.

In the past 10 years, the network has undergone an All IP transformation and an All Cloud transformation. While the user experience has improved, the division of labor of network components has become more and more refined, and the management and operation of the network has become more and more complex. OPEX is more than three times CAPEX. The complexity of the network makes network management more difficult than human capabilities, and 70% of the failures are human factors. This is the structural problem facing the current operator network. Mr. Han Yufa, President of Huawei SoftCOM AI Solutions Department, said that these structural problems can no longer be solved by simply reducing costs or improving personnel skills. Structural problems must be solved with architectural innovation.

Huawei released the SoftCOM AI solution architecture this time. Based on the original all-cloud network architecture, it introduced mature AI technology with machine learning as the core, making the network intelligent. The entire architecture has two cores. One core is the AI ​​training platform, which is used to train data and output models or algorithms; the other core is the intelligent control center, which collects data and infers and executes network action instructions based on the models and algorithms output by the training platform. The introduction of the entire architecture will enable the network to move from automated service deployment and action execution to intelligent fault self-healing, network self-optimization, and self-management, and ultimately realize an autonomous network that never fails.

Mr. Han Yufa said that the value of SoftCOM AI solution architecture to operators can be summarized as three doublings and one improvement. The three doublings are doubling of operation and maintenance efficiency, doubling of energy efficiency, and doubling of resource efficiency. The one improvement is improving user experience. Doubling of operation and maintenance efficiency means that fault analysis and positioning that requires a lot of manual work is transformed into self-optimization and self-healing. Doubling of energy efficiency means, for example, shutting down idle carriers according to traffic volume, or adjusting the CPU main frequency in DC to reduce energy consumption. Doubling of resource efficiency means, for example, balancing network load and improving resource utilization through intelligent routing. Improving user experience means that network design, planning, and configuration are automatically generated, and the service launch time can be shortened to one-tenth of the original.

The intelligentization of operator networks is not achieved overnight, but a long-term practice. Huawei will first start with cases where operators have significantly improved efficiency, and then continue to expand cases, collect data, improve algorithms, accumulate experience, explore deployment models, and gradually apply AI to the entire operator network.
