How practical is 5G for ordinary people?

5G has three main advantages over 4G: high speed, low latency, and multiple links. You may have seen online that 5G networks will have more breakthroughs and practical applications in driverless cars, remote high-definition medical care, remote conferencing, 8K live broadcasts, VR movies and games, cloud computers, and many other areas.

However, these application scenarios are more about the application of 5G networks in To B fields such as industrial Internet and enterprise Internet.

In the To C field, in the first one or two years of the 5G era, the biggest convenience that 5G can bring to individuals is only one, which is high network speed. To put it simply, it means faster download speeds, no pressure to load ultra-clear, blue-ray, and 4K images, and if it can be used with VR peripherals, there will be a better visual experience. However, the above points can also be achieved with gigabit optical fibers.

Many people may not have any idea about the low latency feature and don’t know what it means. Let me put it this way, it may take 1-2 seconds for us to open a web page, but if the 5G network signal is normal, it may take 0.1-0.3 seconds to open it. The network response speed is much faster than that of humans.

What about multi-connection? Let's use a very simple example to explain it. The mobile terminal is connected to 5G, 4G and Wifi at the same time. This has obvious advantages and helps to improve the speed, user experience and coverage, etc. To be more professional, it can connect to multiple ports at the same time.

In fact, the two advantages of low latency and multiple connections will not be very obvious in the first two years of 5G. First, the 5G network in the national area cannot achieve full coverage. Second, there is no software in the application area that can achieve 5G killer application.

So is 5G useless? When will 5G really explode?

First of all, I want to make it clear that 5G is not useless. Just like at the end of the 3G era, many people also questioned whether 4G was practical. At that time, many people thought that 5G network was just a little faster than 3G network, and there was no difference from 3G network in other aspects. But who would have thought that short video would become the largest application field of 4G network?

At present, we are still in the early stages of 5G. 5G mobile phones have just begun to be popularized, 5G base stations are still being laid out frantically (according to statistics, more than 10,000 new 5G base stations are being built every week), and 5G software and applications are also being explored.

Only when 5G mobile phones are basically popular among the public, 5G base stations can cover most areas in the country, 5G software has many killer applications, and even the prices of 5G traffic packages are lowered compared to the current 4G traffic rates, perhaps the true practicality of 5G will be reflected. At that time, 5G can truly usher in an explosion.
