Good news! 5G is so important, China Mobile has made a great contribution

When it comes to 5G networks, everyone should be familiar with them. After all, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, my country has built 690,000 5G base stations and the number of 5G connections has reached 160 million. China is currently the country with the fastest 5G development speed in the world.

Of course, this is inseparable from the hard work of the three major telecom operators. However, for ordinary users like us, the 5G experience may not be very deep. Even users who are already using 5G networks will have this feeling of not having a deep experience.

The main reason is that there are relatively few contents and applications for 5G networks, and there are still only a handful of consumer terminals launched for 5G networks.

But we have to say that the biggest change, or advantage, of 5G networks compared to previous wireless networks such as 4G is not that the network speed is faster.

It is true that the generations of wireless communication networks before 5G all used improved network speed as an obvious feature, but 5G is like a turning point. Increased network speed is one of the advantages, but it is not the core value point.

The most important role of 5G is that it can change society, while 4G only changes life. This is the most essential difference. Simply put, the main value of 5G lies in empowering thousands of industries.

I believe that everyone’s understanding of this is not profound. If we use a vivid example to illustrate, it will naturally be much simpler. Recently, China Mobile provided us with such a vivid 5G empowerment class.

According to media reports, China Mobile and the State Grid Corporation of China have cooperated on 5G smart grid-related applications in the Pearl Bay area of Nansha District, Guangzhou. They have proposed 51 application scenarios, and 14 application scenarios have been launched.

Although only about 30% of the application scenarios have been put online, even so, we have seen the power of 5G, which is really eye-opening.

We have seen that the 5G application scenarios of smart grids are mainly focused on inspection and troubleshooting of power grids. According to media reports, the repair task that previously required up to 6 repairmen and took two hours can now be completed in up to 3 minutes. The key point is that no manpower is required. This automatic line self-healing function of the distribution network can achieve the ability to automatically restore power.

However, this is not all. The 5G network can also be used to realize electronic fences, and foreign objects that break into the electronic fences can be monitored in real time. In addition, drones can be used for inspections, especially for some places that are difficult to reach by manpower. Drone aerial operations are much more convenient.

On the ground, 5G robots can also be used for inspections, and the captured videos can be transmitted back and analyzed in real time using the 5G network. 5G robots are particularly important in severe weather.

However, there is also a 5G amphibious robot, which is even more eye-opening. This type of robot can "walk" on the power supply line and fly away from the line. Using the 5G network, it can realize the backhaul of 4K video. It is reported that before this, a 200-person inspection team was required for the 8,000-kilometer power supply line, and each inspection cycle lasted for two months.

So now if we look at it again, we should be able to better understand the empowerment of 5G to thousands of industries. It has to be said that China Mobile has made great contributions to the application of 5G in the industry this time, but it has to be said that State Grid also has its own strong strengths.

Perhaps you don’t know that in terms of patents, State Grid is even stronger than Huawei. For example, in 2017, State Grid ranked first in China in terms of patent applications, and in 2018 it ranked third in the world, while Huawei ranked seventh in the world.

Therefore, 5G can enable such rapid application in the power grid field, and the State Grid itself has also played a certain key role.

However, I believe that many people will have such doubts, that is, the application of this time in the power grid, at present, is mainly for inspection and maintenance, and it seems that the effect is not very big. In fact, it is not.

In fact, many people still look at this issue from their own perspective. If they look at it from the perspective of industry or enterprise, they will definitely not think so.

Let’s take a typical example. Chips are now familiar to everyone. However, during the chip production process, if there is a sudden power outage, then this batch of wafers will definitely be scrapped. So first of all, the smart grid can give early warning of possible failures, which will avoid corresponding losses.

So what if the failure finally happened? First, the smart grid can restore power faster, and this faster speed can be said to be dozens of times faster than before; second, the smart grid is efficient in restoring power. The high efficiency here means that the smart grid may be able to restore power successfully in one try, but the previous manpower may need to try N times.

Imagine if hundreds of factories were without power for two hours, the total amount of losses would be very different from a three-minute power outage. So, can we say that smart inspection and maintenance of smart grids are not important?

However, it can be said that this is still just the beginning of 5G industry applications. As the digital foundation of the digital economy world, 5G has begun to play an important role, so we will wait and see.
