5G networks are moving towards cloud, virtualization and network slicing

As some telecom operators seek to accelerate the implementation of commercial 5G networks, the choice of "non-standalone" and "standalone" networks has emerged in the process of communication networks transforming from 4G LTE to 5G, according to a new study by Digitimes Research.

At the same time, in order to cope with the various application scenarios and extreme performance requirements under the new network, the architecture and functions of 5G networks have been developing towards the cloud, also including virtualization and network slicing.

In order to meet the technical requirements of South Korea's SK Telecom and the United States' Verizon to deploy commercial 5G networks as soon as possible, 3GPP decided in March 2017 to complete the non-independent 5G NR (New Radio) network standards by December 2017.

While previous mobile networks only needed to carry voice, text messaging and data services, the broadly defined 5G network will highlight its communication capabilities by coordinating and integrating various communication and network technologies, and network slicing is seen as the most innovative technology under the 5G architecture.

While network slicing has the potential to prove the operational viability of mobile communications in emerging vertical communications, it has yet to show that it will also be able to bring more application value to vertical markets.

In addition, the virtualization of telecommunications operators’ communication networks will also promote the standardization of telecommunications equipment to reach general commercial standards, which may also affect

Impact on the market share of existing telecommunications equipment suppliers.
