The communication power supply is the "heart" of the communication system. The stable operation of communication equipment is inseparable from the uninterrupted power supply of the communication power supply. If the communication power supply fails (insufficient or interrupted power supply, etc.), the communication quality will be reduced at the least, and communication will be impossible at the worst, causing significant economic losses and bringing great inconvenience to people's lives.

Common application scenarios of communication power supply include: wireless access network base stations, renewable energy systems, Internet data centers, core network center computer rooms and telecommunications bureau computer rooms, etc.

3. Appearance and composition of communication power supply

As we know, the power supply of communication equipment can be AC ​​power supply or DC power supply, and currently it is mainly -48 V DC communication power supply. Today we will take DC communication power supply equipment as an example to introduce its appearance and composition.

It can be seen that the communication power supply is mainly composed of an AC distribution unit, a DC distribution unit, a centralized system management unit, a rectifier group and a battery group.

4. Working principle of communication power supply

Stable DC output requires the support and cooperation of the following five components.

As can be seen from the above figure, the input AC power is processed by three components: AC distribution unit, rectifier group and DC distribution unit, and finally output as DC power.

To better understand this process, we can regard it as a goods transaction. The role of the AC distribution unit is the "raw material supplier". The "raw materials" are the AC input provided by the mains or diesel generator, the rectifier is the "processing plant", and the DC distribution unit is the "warehouse/shipping place".

Since the communication equipment needs to be powered continuously, the total demand for goods is large enough, so:

  • We need to keep purchasing raw materials.
  • Multiple "processing plants" "screen" the raw materials they receive (filtering out spike currents and noise) before starting production.
  • Goods are shipped from the "warehouse/shipping location" according to the customer's demand for goods (depending on the size of the distribution current).

So what are the remaining battery packs and centralized system management units used for?

  • The battery pack can directly provide direct current without participating in the current conversion process. As a "backup energy source", the battery pack can power communication equipment when there is no AC input.
  • The centralized system management unit manages and detects the working status of each component by "communicating" with other components, analyzes and processes these data, and tracks and manages the operation of the entire power system.

5. Development trend of communication power supply

With the development of communication technology, from the initial DC/DC converter (DC voltage conversion) to today's communication power supply, it has gone through the process of high frequency conversion technology, change of power supply mode, improvement of energy storage technology and the emergence of centralized system management.

Today's communications power supplies tend to be more integrated, more efficient and more intelligent, and can better adapt to the 5G communications market.
