GSMA: Global 5G connections will reach 1.8 billion by 2025

According to a new study from GSMA, global 5G connections are expected to reach 1.8 billion by 2025. The study, titled "Mobile Economy 2021", shows that by 2021, 5G technology will account for 21% of all mobile connections worldwide.

Developed Asia and the United States will lead in 5G adoption, with the technology expected to account for 53% of total mobile connections in developed Asian markets and 51% of mobile lines in North America by 2025, the industry group said.

In addition, the report also emphasized that by 2025, China will reach 828 million 5G users, accounting for nearly half of the global 5G user base.

GSMA said that by the end of 2025, 5G will account for just over one-fifth of all mobile connections, and more than two-fifths of the world's population will live within the coverage of a 5G network. In the next five years, 5G will account for 80% of total capital expenditure.

The report said 157 commercial 5G networks, including 55 FWA networks, have been deployed in 62 markets around the world.

In addition, there were 234 million connections in the 5G space at the end of March, accounting for 4% of all mobile connections. The GSMA also reported that more than 600 5G devices have been announced, of which more than 400 are now commercially available.

“As 5G starts to expand to more devices beyond smartphones, new commercialisation opportunities will emerge. This is already being enabled by new 5G applications and form factors around augmented and virtual reality technologies,” the GSMA said.
