Experts give reasons for slow 4G network speed: too many users and bloated apps

Do you feel that the current 4G network speed is getting slower and slower, whether it is China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom? In early January this year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China stated that through a comprehensive analysis of multiple third-party data, the overall 4G network speed in the country remained stable, but there may be some areas and certain periods of time where the speed has declined. The main reason is that the growth of 4G user traffic and the improvement of network support capabilities are not fully matched.

Regarding this issue, there is a saying circulating in the outside world that operators are now focusing on 5G networks, so it is reasonable to slow down 4G, but experts do not agree with this statement.

Some experts said that operators use DSS technology to occasionally use 4G low-frequency spectrum for 5G networks in some business scenarios to achieve 4G/5G network integration, but this has little impact on 4G network speed. The main reason is that capacity expansion has not kept up, which is equivalent to the road not changing, but the number of cars has increased.

Some experts also pointed out that another factor that cannot be ignored in the slowdown of 4G networks is that APP software has become larger and more bloated. Some APPs are hundreds of megabytes in size and have to load video ads when they are opened, which also affects the user experience.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has previously stated that it will supervise and guide operators to build and optimize their networks, and organize third-party organizations to continuously conduct nationwide network speed testing. At the same time, this also requires operators to strike a balance between building 5G networks and optimizing 4G networks.

Prior to this, SpeedTest released the "China Internet Speed Report for Q1 2020", which stated that compared with the data of the three major operators in the first quarter of 2020 and 2019, China Telecom achieved rapid growth in 4G download speed, with a growth rate of 95%; China Mobile increased by 25.2%; China Unicom increased by 83.6%. In terms of average upload speed, China Telecom increased by 20.2% compared with the same period last year, and China Unicom increased by 64.9%.
