The number of active IPv6 users in my country has reached 608 million, and IPv6+ development has entered the second stage

On January 22, according to Feixiang.com, on January 20, China Unicom's IPv6+ Innovation Practice and Large-Scale Deployment Promotion Conference was held simultaneously at the Unicom main venue and the Xiong'an branch venue.

Wu Hequan, director of the expert committee for promoting large-scale deployment of IPv6 and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, elaborated in detail on the technical development direction of "IPv6+" 1.0/2.0/3.0 at the meeting, which will play an important guiding role in accelerating the innovative development of "IPv6+" and promoting large-scale deployment of IPv6.

Data shows that as of December 2021, the number of active IPv6 users in my country has reached 608 million, accounting for about 60.11% of Chinese netizens. In terms of traffic, the total IPv6 traffic of the metropolitan area network exceeded 44.77 Tbps, accounting for 9.38% of the total traffic of the entire network, mainly because the upgrade and transformation of home gateways has not kept up. The total IPv6 traffic of the LTE core network exceeded 24.43 Tbps, accounting for 35.15% of the total traffic of the entire network.

In terms of IPv6 address ownership, my country has applied for a total of 60,059 IPv6 address resources, ranking first in the world. In terms of IPv6 autonomous systems, the proportion of ASs supporting IPv6 has grown steadily, with 6,359 ASs supporting IPv6 accounting for 77.95%, and more than two-thirds of networks have completed IPv6 transformation.

Academician Wu Hequan said that some international organizations have also provided data on IPv6 adoption rates or penetration rates among Internet users, including in my country. Due to different testing methods and amounts of data obtained, the numbers are different, but they can be used as a reference for horizontal comparison.

Research organization APNIC said that as of the end of 2021, the proportion of global IPv6 users to the Internet was 28.28%, and China accounted for 37.65%, second only to Japan and India.

According to data from Akamai, China's IPv6 adoption rate is 21.6%, a nearly 20-fold increase from the end of 2017, ranking 38th in the world.
